UPDATE: At 5:00 p.m. today (Sept. 11), the Gooding Recreation Board reversed their no-girls in youth football policy. Click HERE for the updated story from the Times-News.

Original Post:

Should girls be allowed to play football?

It's a sensitive subject that seems to fire up to flames of controversy from time to time. And now, that controversy is hitting home here in Idaho.

If we were to flip this story and make it about a girls-only sport, say volleyball for instance, would it be as big of a deal? What if the question was "Should guys be allowed to play volleyball?" What would happen then?

Let me know your thoughts about this in the comment section below.

The following story is courtesy of the Associated Press and the Times-News:

GOODING, Idaho (AP) -- A southern Idaho recreational football league is banning girls from play, even though league rules specify that girls should be included.

The Times-News reports Gooding Recreation District Director Kent Seifert recently told youth football coach Smokey Legarreta to remove two girls from his team after Legarreta allowed them to join despite the local ban. Seifert declined to comment on the ban.

One of the girls is Legarreta's stepdaughter. He says both cried when he told them they couldn't play on the fifth-grade team anymore.

Gooding is the only team in the Magic Valley Youth Football League that bans girls, and league rules say both girls and boys are eligible. League Commissioner Mike Preece says he doesn't have enforcement power, but the league will review the situation next year.
