When you have one of the best players in the state returning for his senior season there will be plenty of optimism surrounding your team.

That is exactly the scenario that faces 24th year Head Coach Chris Frost and his Highland Rams this year on the hardwood.

Senior guard Steffon Gonzalez is back after earning All-Idaho First Team accolades for his 19.8 points per game on 48 percent shooting from the field last year.

Gonzalez is a pure scorer who has been a key part of the Highland basketball program during his time there. All three years he has been in school the Rams have made the state tournament. He hopes to bring home some hardware this time around similar to what his counterparts on the gridiron have already done.

Just as it has been the case during the recent run of success, Highland should have plenty of depth surrounding its leading scorer.

Junior swingman Connor Harding will be relied upon to help provide leadership on the team while also filling up the basket on the offensive end.

Harding was an All-Idaho Second Team honoree for his efforts last season.

The duo of Gonzalez and Harding should provide Frost with arguably the best backcourt combination at any level in the state.

After the Rams took the consolation title with both last season, that is a scary thought for opposing coaches in the new campaign.

Within the 5A District 5 and 6 Conference Highland appears to be in the driver’s seat with Skyline being the most likely challenger.

Madison lost some talent from their team last season and will need to rebuild quickly to contend with the Rams and Grizzlies at the top of the conference.

Bonneville is also now in the 5A classification after experiencing plenty of success in the 4A’s during recent years. The Bees could be another contender.

No matter who they play Highland will employ an up-tempo style on the offensive end, while placing plenty of emphasis on lockdown defense on the other side of things.

Finding a strong low-post presence early in the season could help make the difference this year for the Rams.

Coach Frost is excited about the role players he has on roster who should help to provide plenty of depth to ensure fresh legs are always on the floor for Highland, making the Rams a dangerous team in the 5A’s again this season.
