Team Preview:
The Bears have won five straight 4A Region 1 titles.
Back for the Bears in their quest for No. 6 is 6-foot senior guard Jack Akey, son of former Idaho football coach Robb Akey, and a returning all-4A Inland Empire League selection.
Also returning for Moscow off last year's 9-13 squad is Kaleb Gorton, a 6-2 senior forward; and Ryan Stevens, a 5-10 senior guard.
Second-year Bears head coach Aaron Dail said all-league guard Adam Gresch, who graduated, will be missed for his defensive intensity and leadership. But he's hoping newcomer Glenn Gosse, a 5-10 sophomore guard, can have an impact.
Speed, ball handling and quickness are the strengths of the Bears offensively, Dail said. Patience and efficiency are areas for improvement, he said.
On defense, quickness, on-ball pressure and generating turnovers are strengths of his team, he said. Helpside defense, rebounding and transition defense are areas for improvement, he added.
The motto/theme for this year's season is "Together," said Dail, who is excited about "building team dynamics."
Once again, Moscow has to beat Lakeland and Sandpoint to get to state. Last year, Moscow was the top seed at regionals, and beat Lakeland in the regional title game.
The "X-factor" for Moscow's success this season, Dail said, is "trust in each other, discipline and work ethic."
Dail said if he could change one rule in Idaho high school basketball, it would be "let there be more contact on defense."
He said he enjoys coaching high school basketball so he can "be a positive impact to our athletes, and teach them how to carry themselves after sports and school."
He likes coaching at Moscow High because it has
a "great combination of scholastic and athletic goals."
