After falling a game short of making yet another return trip to the state tournament, the Marsh Valley Eagles will look to get back to the success of earlier in the decade, which was highlighted by an undefeated season capped off with a state championship during the 2011-2012 season.

Marsh Valley has won three state championships in girls basketball, all coming since 2004, giving them a great ten year run. The task will now be to create a new dynasty on the hardwood.

Led by Head Coach Kyle McQuivey, the team will rely on a balanced approach between interior play and a perimeter attack which looks to be much improved this season.

The main challenge for Marsh Valley this year will be based around how to replace the outstanding productivity provided by the now departed Faith Lolofie, who graduated following last season.

Lolofie consistently kept the Eagles in games with her ability to grab rebounds on both sides of the floor, utilizing what was a size advantage in nearly all of her games.

It can be expected that it will take a full team effort to attempt to make up for the loss of such a big part of their team.

“All players will be key players,” said McQuivey. “[They’ll need to] keep positive attitudes, helping each other on and off the court.”

Chemistry can be expected to be a strong suit for a team that plays within its offensive and defensive styles regardless of what their opponent may be doing. The philosophy has worked in the past and McQuivey has the players believing this could be the year they get back to the state tournament.

Discipline will be the name of the game on the offensive and defensive sides as MarshValley attempts to stick with their game plan each time out.

The Eagles will need to limit turnovers and fouls, something which plagued them during their final game last season in a 51-36 loss to Teton in the state tournament play-in game held at Century High School.

Marsh Valley plays within the 3A Southeast Idaho Conference, a league which lost one of its more competitive programs in Bear Lake, while American Falls and Snake River both lost their star players in Maria Sanchez and Brylie Bair to graduation.

The new-look league could help to ignite the Eagles this year as they try to find a way to replace Lolofie and contend within an ever-changing conference.
