Team Preview

The Tigers have played in the state 3A championship game in three of the past four seasons, and despite a few key losses, return a solid nucleus that could have Timberlake back in the state title hunt again.

Gone to graduation are a couple of key inside players, Jessica Norlander and Abbi Seubert, as well as Julie Fitzmorris, known for her work ethic and leadership.

But Timberlake, 18-9 last year, has six returning players, including Keelie Lawler, a sophomore guard/forward who was all-Intermountain League and first team all-Idaho; and Allison Kirby, a 5-7 sophomore guard who was all-league and second team all-Idaho.

Also back are Reina Powell, a 5-3 senior guard; Anna Gardom, a 5-7 junior forward; Payten Rhodes, a 5-6 junior guard; and Jacquelyn Mallet, a 5-7 sophomore guard/forward.

Staying healthy, and rebounding, are the "X-factors" this season for Timberlake, a smallish team this year.

"I have a very young team that is very hard working and eager to learn and get better," said Matt Miller, beginning his 10th season as Timberlake coach.

Miller said his team's speed and quickness will be its biggest strengths on offense and defense. Less turnovers, and a higher field goal percentage, are points of emphasis on offense.

Defensively, transition defense and rebounding are areas for improvement, he said.

Miller said if he could change one rule in Idaho high school basketball, it would be to add a shot clock, because it "keeps the game moving and more exciting."

Asked what makes his school was the best to coach at, he said, "our administration and parents. The parents have been very supportive and our athletic director, Tim Cronnelly, is the best."
