For all of the 2000’s and early this decade the Weiser Wolverines were always one of the teams to beat in the District 3/Snake River Valley Conference. But the last two years Weiser has taken a small step backwards after making several consecutive trips to the state championships.
Head coach Nick Reed has a squad this year with the ability to get back to state. The 6th year head man, who has been coaching at the school for 16 years, has a team full of experience.
Returning for her fourth year on varsity is (#34) post Sadie Shirts. The 5-foot-9 two-time first team All SRV honoree is a versatile player. Shirt’s averaged 11 points a game last year. She’s the daughter of girl’s assistant Dave Shirts, who was the long-time boys’ basketball coach at Weiser.
Reed said his top scorer, “can do anything. She can player every position. She’s a great defender and she guards the other team’s best player.”
The Wolverines also return several key role players off of last year’s 11-12 team. Senior point guard Dana Kerner started all last year. She was pressed into starting action after Reed’s daughter badly injured her knee.
“She’s a tough kid you know is going to be there every day and work hard,” He said of Kerner.
Junior post Emily Gluch (5-foot-10) has been starting since her game one of freshman year. She averaged 7.5 points and 6 rebounds a game as a sophomore. Reed is expecting more from the “hard worker” he coined as “a basketball kid.”
Speaking of the coach’s daughter, Junior Ali Reed, the starting point guard as a freshman tore her ACL last year and missed the season. Reed says the negative is now a positive as it created depth with the formidable backcourt tandem of Reed and Kerner.
Also back is senior post Sonya Mink. At 5-foot-9 Mink has great footwork. Reed said, “I’m looking forward to her experience. She’s a very capable scorer. I think she’s going to have a great season.”
Reed is also expecting depth from several sophomores. The depth should help in Weiser’s up-tempo pressing style.
As for the conference, Reed feels the addition of Emmett, who drops down from the 4A Southern Idaho Conference, should be bring depth to a league that has traditionally struggled to perform at the state tournament.
“I’m excited Emmett has come into our league. It’s going to make us tougher. We could take last or take first. The league is really loaded,” said Reed, who also noted the depth and returning talent at Fruitland and Homedale.
“We set very high expectations. Every day we play the part that we are going to be successful. To the kids I try to set the bar really high. Realistically, I know we have a great league. So if we can do well at league, we can do well at state.”
