This is Year 2 of Sandpoint’s rebuilding process under Kent Leiss, and the Bulldogs still have some work left to do in order to be competitive in the Inland Empire League this season.

For the most part, that revolves around reviving a flagging offense and complementing it with rugged defense.

Sandpoint returns four key players, including all-conference honoree guard Davan Norris. On offense, the Bulldogs will look to feature Norris as much as is practical, as he facilitates the offense and also is an accomplished marksman from the perimeter– including a game last season in which he hit eight 3-pointers. Norris is the team’s most skilled offensive player, but the rest of the team is working hard to provide an effective complement so that teams can’t key on him alone and leave the offense dead in the water – something that was all too common for Sandpoint a year ago.

Team defense is the calling card of this team, holding their two playoff opponents to an average of 39.5 points. Team defense isn’t the glaring issue on this squad, but Leiss says there is still a desire to fine-tune and continue to improve in the defensive schemes.

Progress continues to be made in Sandpoint’s program building, and Leiss says that if the chief issue of being better and more consistent offensively can be rectified this season, and the defense stays at least where it was last season or marginally improves, the Bulldogs should be just fine and in the mix for a state tournament berth.
