The Skyview boys basketball program has produced three state titles since the 2004-05 season. Whether the Hawks will be in contention for another championship this season remains to be seen.

But seventh-year coach Aaron Sanders is sure of one thing: He's going to enjoy the ride.

"This is a group of kids that works very hard, loves basketball and wants to be successful," Sanders said. "They are a fun group to coach."

Fun to coach? Yes. But missing a playmaker from last season? Definitely. Skyview will be without Holton Hyde, who led the team in scoring, rebounding and assists as the team finished with a 13-11 overall record.

The Hawks can't help but miss Hyde, who graduated. But they do have a pair of returning seniors – guard Justice Cook and post Jacob Hibbard – who hope to make an impact in their final season. Also, sophomore Demonte Horton gained experience playing as a freshman last season.

Sprinkle in a few new players who could make an immediate impact, and Sanders hopes to have a team that can create offensively in any number of ways.

"We have a lot of balance both in different players that can score and players that can score from the perimeter and inside," he said.

If you happen to attend a Skyview practice you might find Sanders putting the players through a gauntlet of shooting drills.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well last year from the perimeter, so I hope this year we can shoot the ball better," Sanders said.

And while the Hawks might not be overly intimidating that doesn't mean they can't make plays on the defensive side of the court.

"We have average height, but we have a lot of length," Sanders said. "We hope to use that length to create turnovers, contest shots and rebound."

If they can do that, Sanders' job will be not only enjoyable, but also satisfying.
