Team Preview

After showing plenty of improvement under first year Head Coach Ryan Wahlen, Aberdeen enters the new year with promise to do more this time around.

The Tigers were able to manage an 11-11 mark last season, with Tasha Pocock and Makenna Schritter highlighting the returners from that group.

Gone are a couple of players who provided depth inside in Madison Behrend and Patricia Gonzalez, making the task of finding their replacements at the top of the to-do list.

For Wahlen, the x-factor in a successful year is obvious.

“The play of our posts,” he stated. “Our most experienced post is out until at least mid-season with a knee injury. We have two new posts who have never played at the varsity level before.”

In the backcourt the Tigers should be solid, with a core group of juniors and seniors ready to provide more experience on the floor in Aberdeen this season.

“I’m very excited that we’re a more experienced group this season,” said Wahlen. “Last season, through 15 games, we had the highest points per game average of any team in 2A. I think we’re more balanced this year.”

As can be expected with how many points Aberdeen likes to put on the board, the Tigers will employ an up-tempo style.

“We hope to play a very fast-paced, aggressive style of offense and defense,” said Wahlen. “I hope that it’s fun to watch.”

In the early going improving on the defensive end will be tough with a key injury.

“Zoe Behrend was our defensive player of the year last season,” said Wahlen. “She’s currently out with a knee injury. We try to play an aggressive, active style of defense with a focus on creating turnovers.”

A big early season matchup that will tell a little more on how good Aberdeen will be this season takes place on Dec. 2 at Ririe, a team that made it to the state championship last season.
