The Tri-Valley High football team has a new football coach this season.

But don't expect Bob Johnson to have first-game jitters when the Titans suit up this season.

After all, Johnson has been coaching high school football for nearly 40 years, in one role or another. Since the 1970s, he's had stints with Cambridge, Melba and Weiser.
And now, he's taking over the reins at Tri-Valley.

“They were kind of in need of a coach, and I told them I'd do it,” Johnson said.

With Johnson in the fold, the Tri-Valley team will certainly be a family affair. His son, Brock Johnson, will be a sophomore lineman, and he has two stepsons who will also be in the fold: senior Hyrum Southwick and freshman Orion Southwick.

In addition to his family members, Johnson is plenty familiar with the rest of the team.

One of the team leaders will be Andrew Schneidewind, a senior who will likely get plenty of carries at running back.

“He'll be a leader, definitely,” Johnson said. “He got hurt in the early part of the year last season and didn't play the rest of the year. But he's been starting since he was a freshman, other than when he was injured.”

Schneidewind is a short, stocky player who is built to penetrate defenses.

“He's a fullback type,” Johnson said. “But he's a pretty good receiver, as well.”

A freshman will be taking the snaps under center.
“Jared Mink started for the middle school the past few years, and he led them to two undefeated seasons,” Johnson said.

That experience will certainly come in handy. But still, Mink is a freshman who will be starting at the high school level.

“He's pretty calm and collected, but I'm sure it's going to test him a bit,” Johnson said.

If Mink needs an extra beat to make decisions, there is at least one lineman in front of him who will do all he can to give the freshman some added time in the backfield.

“Tyler Rasmussen is a sophomore, but he's big and athletic,” Johnson said. “He's going to be really helpful for us this year. … He's got lots of potential.”

Johnson said it's players like Rasmussen that allow him to continue to enjoy coaching.

“It's a good group,” he said. “We've been working hard, and they seem really receptive to what we're trying to do. … I'm having a good time.”
