Team Preview:

Written by: Lucas Gebhart

The second season of the Scott Moore era at Capital High School will be about building off of the first season as the Eagles try to rebuild the program to what it was in the 1970s when they won four consecutive state championships.

Capital will have to get back to the glory days without a group of seniors that will be difficult to replace.

Capital lost Sam Brixey, who is now running track at Washington State University, Cameron Daron, who started every game for the Eagles last season, Gunnar Condie, Sawyer Wilcox and Jacob Hardy to graduation.

The senior group will be replaced with another cast of upperclassmen who have a year of Coach Moore’s system under their belt.

“The experience we return is special and unique,” Moore said. “The bond these guys have together is something they built on before they ever stepped foot on Capital’s campus. We’re excited to see how it adds to the Capital Basketball legacy.”

Senior guard Justin Saunders, returns off of a Second Team All-Conference season as fellow senior Harrison Ashby comes off of an SIC Honorable Mention season.

“Justin Saunders and Harrison Ashby will be major contributors this year,” Moore said. “Both are receiving interest to play in college next year.”

The seasoned Capital squad will rely on returning players rather than new incoming players for success in the 2016-17 season.

In addition to Saunders and Ashby, Capital returns four other seniors and one junior. Senior Cameron Godney-Scott, who missed half of the season last year, returns to the post. Senior guards Alex Lindsey and Sloan Kruger return to an experienced Capital backcourt while Parker Olsen returns as a junior.

Drew Zmuda will provide senior leadership from the wing as he returns for another season.

“We’ll rely on the experience of those returners,” Moore said.

Lindsey is the team’s defensive leader, as the Eagles will apply constant pressure from the opening-tip to the final buzzer.

“We hope to improve on our relentless pressure, and defend at a high-level for the entirety of the game,” Moore said.

Moore’ second season in the SIC will be just as difficult as the first, as the 5A classification is once again loaded.

To get back to what Capital was doing in the ‘70s, Capital will have to play consistent each night.

“Consistency in each game, as yet again, this conference will feature some very talented teams and players,” Moore said. “We anticipate Rocky Mountain being one of the top teams in the state, and the only time we’ll face each other in the regular season is here at Capital.”

Capital will host Rocky Mountain on Saturday, Jan. 21.
