This basketball season will open up a new era in Fairfield as the Camas County Mushers have large shoes to fill following the loss of leading scorer and inspirational leader Erick Peterson.

While Peterson had helped anchor the team for the past few seasons, the Mushers still struggled in what is a perennially tough 1AD2 North Side Conference.

Now it is time to see if a young group with more speed than in years past can make the difference.

"We are a young team but the most skilled and athletic team we will be able to field in years," said fourth year Head Coach Jamon Frostenson.

Leading the talent pool for Camas County is KC Hainline down low and Austin Burns from the forward position.

"Behind Austin Burns, our decent younger players will be given a chance to mature on the court as we learn a more up-tempo offense this year," said Frostenson. "Dominant post play from KC Hainline will help balance inside and outside scoring."

He hopes the Mushers will improve with patience on the offensive end as well as in converting in up-tempo transition opportunities.

Both sides of the floor could see overall improvement with more depth on the roster.

"We are going to be a more athletic and defensively minded team than we’ve ever been. Austin Burns and Erik Robles will be our defensive leaders," said Frostenson.

To help on the defensive end Camas County will implore pressure and try to wear down the opposition.

"We are going to improve on our full court pressure this season to force teams to be competent handling the ball the whole game and make conditioning a fourth quarter factor," added Frostenson.

The x-factor to how successful this team can be this season will be how well the younger players gel and buy in to the up-tempo style.

Even with the loss of Peterson the Mushers have potential to still see an upward tick in wins this season, although it will take younger players making large impacts, something well within the realm of possibility.
