A senior inside-out duo is what Wood River will look to rely on this season to improve upon an 8-16 mark from one year ago.

That tandem is wing Cade Schott and post Travis Swanson. The two will be asked to provide senior leadership, along with a scoring punch on the offensive end for a team that was inconsistent on that side of the floor last season.

Second year Head Coach Matt Newhouse says execution and patience will be strengths in the offense, while he wants to see an upward spike in the shooting percentage.

Gone from the previous version of the Wolverines are Alec Nordsieck, now a walk-on quarterback at the University of Idaho, and Nick Tidwell.

On the defensive end of the floor Wood River has the ability to be a shutdown defense, although Newhouse hopes for a better performance on the defensive glass.

With the players on the current roster, he is excited about the group.

"My team is smart and fun to have in the gym."

It's basketball IQ that gives the Wolverines an advantage in playing their style of basketball. For Newhouse, he says that is the style they look to employ on each end of the floor.

"Awareness and understanding of the given scheme we are operating at that moment," is how he described the team.

In all reality, Wood River is still a year or two away from challenging for the upper portion of the conference, although the team showed last season that on any given night they can give teams a run for their money. Some of the highlights of last year included putting late scares into Burley and Jerome, along with defeating Twin Falls and Canyon Ridge.

Look for a similar story this time around in Hailey as Newhouse looks to continue making his mark on the Wood River basketball program.
