Nobody said it was going to be easy for Glenns Ferry last season after having to replace a stellar senior class that had great success on the football field the year prior.

After starting the year 0-7, the Pilots were able to turn things around in the final two games of the 2017 campaign against Shoshone and Valley, shutting out the Indians 52-0 and then upsetting Valley in the season finale 28-26.

With one year under his belt as the head coach, Jake Shrum now has a more experienced group at his disposal that hopes to build upon the consecutive victories at the end of last year.

Quarterback Tanner Martinez and running back Carson Grigg will be prominent faces in the offensive attack for Glenns Ferry. Both have the ability to generate explosive plays, and with talent surrounding them, should be able to have strong seasons.

The challenge defensively is as tough as ever against quality opposing offenses on a weekly basis in a loaded Snake River Conference. Last season the Pilots allowed 38 points or more on six separate occasions, although the unit should be able to show improvement this time around with Grigg and Dillon Traudt on the defensive line and Oscar Sanchez manning the middle from his linebacker position.

Two of the more difficult pieces to replace from last season played major roles on the defensive side of the ball, as Glenns Ferry loses Honorable Mention All-Conference players Keyton Cook and Jared Self to graduation.

The Pilots have as favorable of a schedule as you can have in the Snake River Conference, not having to play any of the top four preseason coaches poll selections until the final four weeks of the season. That should allow the team to continue to gel early and build up even more experience to get ready for Valley, Challis, Raft River and Oakley to wrap up the season. Game one is scheduled for August 24 on the road against Mark Martell’s Rimrock Raiders.
