Snake River

From 1995 to 2002, Snake River was synonymous with 3A state champions. The Panthers won 7 titles under legendary coach Tom Harrison during that time, their incredibly streak broken only by the 1997 Weiser Wolverines.

Last year, Snake River’s hopes ran high going in to the state championship game at BSU against the Fruitland Grizzlies, only to have those same hopes dashed as the Grizzlies soundly throttled them 42-14.

But you can’t keep a good Panther down. They came back this year, dominating the middle-of-the-pack teams while playing close with the teams that ended up with better records.

Snake River may have a 7-3 record on paper, but if you dig deeper you will see those losses came at the hands of the undefeated Blackfoot Broncos, conference champions Marsh Valley Eagles and a one-point loss to Star Valley, WY.

Snake River lost to Marsh Valley 14-0 in week six in Arimo, but after that they remained undefeated through the rest of the season. The Panthers are a team laying in wait for their chance to regain the glory of old. This weekend gives them not only a chance to avenge that loss earlier in the season, but a chance to get back to the 3A championship game.

Marsh Valley can score. A simple glance at their season schedule will tell you that. After going undefeated in conference play, the Eagles have danced through the playoffs, scoring 110 points in their last two games alone. Their season record of 8-2 is blemished only by the 4A Preston Indians and the 9-1 Mountain River Conference Champion, Salmon Savages, who were rudely sent home by Snake River last week 23-21 in the quarter-finals.

Marsh Valley’s only 3A state football championship came back in 2004, under head coach Jason Taylor. It’s been 8 long years since the Eagles beat McCall 23-7 at BSU. The kids, the coaches and the town all want to see their team play at Holt Arena next weekend to bring home another title. Unfortunately, I think they are going to have to wait until next year…
