Team Preview:

Written by: Sven Alskog

The back-to-back 2A state champion Firth Cougars return plenty of talent once again this season, making them a legitimate threat for the three-peat.

Firth’s returners are highlighted by First Team All-Conference guard Lucas Orme and Second Team All-State forward Connor Burkhart, who was also named Second Team All-Conference. Mason Giles rounds out the key trio for Head Coach Scott Adams, who saw his son Braydon and two other big contributors exit to graduation after last season.

Braydon Adams and Dallan Bingham were First Team All-State performers, with Adams averaging 15 points per game on his way to Nuclear Conference Player of the Year honors, while Bingham was solid on the inside averaging 9 points per game.

Second Team All-Conference selection Zak Johnson has also graduated, leaving the remaining players and a handful of incomers from the JV squad with plenty of opportunities to see more time on the floor.

The Cougars have strong options offensively, as Burkhart is one of the more dangerous options, being a tall and lanky big man who can also step out and hit a jump shot when needed.

Giles and Orme will step into larger leadership roles now, something that could dictate just how far Firth goes come late February/early March.

For Adams, he is most excited about the “challenge of staying on top” with the new team in place, also stating that there is potential for good leadership with the core on the floor.

As usual, look for the Cougars to attack on defense and push the issue on the other end, something that has worked out mighty well under Adams, who has already won six state championships.
