The Ambrose School has been so close the last two seasons. The Archers lost in the 1A-2 championship two seasons ago and were clipped by eventual state champion Prairie in the first round of the 1A-1 tournament last season.

But virtually the entire team that won the consolation trophy is back from those two experiences and is poised to make one last run together at a possible state title. Those who know small-school basketball know how good the Archers can be.

They have a mix of quality players outside and in, led by all-conference junior guard Jaxon Hughes and all-state senior forward Travis Yenor. Around them are fellow all-conference honorees Easton Boeck and Jack Roberts, plus a host of others. Ambrose has a good match of size and skill, allowing it to generate offense from the perimeter or the paint.

What the Archers do best is penetrating and kicking to open shooters, then either taking that shot or working the ball back inside to Boeck or Yenor. Where they could stand to improve is to better utilize the entirety of their on-floor personnel and do a better job recognizing and capitalizing on mismatches.

Defensively Ambrose is in-your-face in its man-to-man defense. Longtime coach Ken Hosier said the team takes pride in playing defense with such intensity and proximity that defenders can determine the flavor of the opponent’s gum. The Archers dictate on defense and look to constrict opponents as a whole. Communicating in that defense and diversifying without the ball are points of emphasis in 2015-16.

The Archers have as close to a complete team as one can have in the 1A ranks. They hope the further expansion of their offense and defense will be the difference as they chase the ultimate prize.
