2014-15 was a banner season for Liberty Charter. The Patriots went 22-5 and got to the consolation trophy game at the 1A-1 state tournament. In 2015-16, the gaudy record might not be there but there’s plenty of talent and time to jell ahead of the state tournament in March.

Liberty Charter underwent a lot of turnover in the offseason, graduating four key players. But the Patriots have returning experience still, headlined by returning first-team all-conference selection Michael Wachsmuth. He and the other returning varsity players will help anchor the Patriots’ charge in 2015-16.

On offense the Patriots hope to continue their traditional offense of getting the ball down the floor quickly, though some focus may go toward slowing it down and taking long possessions where necessary. Liberty Charter has rarely had trouble establishing some fashion of paint presence, but perimeter productivity will be something to watch going forward.

Defensively Liberty Charter will continue its off-shoulder, pack-it-in defense, but could stand to improve on the glass. The team’s stated goal is to win the rebounding battle every night, as well as be even or slightly ahead in the turnover battle.

The team is young but has potential, according to veteran coach Seth Stallcop. In order to accelerate the growth process, Liberty Charter has beefed up the schedule significantly. In addition to a tough conference slate, the Patriots is playing a non-conference schedule that includes 2A Cole Valley Christian, Marsing and Melba (twice), as well as 3A Gooding. If nothing else, the Patriots figure to be battle-tested as they enter conference play
