Each week, we'll highlight some of the top matchups and how everything went down with our "Weekly Rewind."

Football

Preston 7, Lakeland 6

The first football game of the season didn't actually take place in Idaho.  Lakeland and Preston met at Montana Tech University in Butte for a neutral site contest.  The Indians outlasted Lakeland in a defensive battle 7-6.  Brecker Knapp threw a touchdown to Tyler Lindhardt to provide the winning score for Preston (1-0).  Lakeland (0-1) almost tied the game with a touchdown pass from Devon Suko to Thomas Calder, but Ashton Madsen blocked the extra point attempt.

Minico 20, Century 14

Minico's Wing-T attack rushed for nearly 200 yards in a season opening victory over Century.  Junior running back Brevin Trenkle found the end zone twice for Minico (1-0), and fellow running back J.T. Garza scored on a seven-yard run as well.  Century (0-1) scored on a 10-yard pass from McKean Romriell to Nick Ellis, and a 2-yard run by Blake Phelan.

Rocky Mountain 12, Highland 7

In a rematch of last year's 5A quarterfinal showdown, Rocky Mountain again emerged victorious.  The Grizzlies (1-0) jumped out to a 12-0 lead, thanks to big plays from both of their quarterbacks.  Teagan Sweaney threw a 10-yards score to running back Arthur Williams.  That score was followed by an electrifying 95-yard touchdown run by Hunter Steaker on a quarterback keeper.  Highland (0-1) mounted a furious rally in the fourth quarter.  Jack Whitmer threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Raimon Barela with just over nine minutes to play.  The Rams got the ball back late and mounted one final drive.  Despite moving the ball well on their final possession, Highland ultimately ran out of time, and defending 5A champion Rocky Mountain escaped with the win.

Boys Soccer

Coeur d'Alene 1, Post Falls 0

It's always tough to play a conference game as your season opener.  Coeur d'Alene (1-0, 1-0) and Post Falls (0-1, 0-1) both left it all on the field Saturday in a tight battle throughout.  Cooper Prohaska scored the winner for the Vikings off of a free kick from Alex Reyes in the 52nd minute.

Thunder Ridge 4, Blackfoot 2

In a 5A-4A matchup between teams expected to do well this year, it was the larger Thunder Ridge program that came away with the 4-2 win on Saturday.  Thunder Ridge (1-0) led 1-0 at halftime, and ended a potential rally by Blackfoot (0-1) with an insurance goal late.

Girls Soccer

Preston 4, Hillcrest 1

The defending 4A champions from Preston found themselves locked in a 1-1 stalemate with Hillcrest at halftime of their season opener Friday.  The Indians (1-0) outscored the Knights (0-1) 3-0 in the second half, and coasted to the 4-1 win.  Tessa Hyde scored twice and assisted on a third goal for Preston in the win.

Rocky Mountain 7, Vallivue 0

After suffering a 2-1 loss in their season opener on Friday against Lone Peak, Utah (a team that had a two-week head start on the Grizzlies), Rocky Mountain rebounded in a big way against Vallivue (0-1) on Saturday.  Kaitlyn Slocum scored three times for Rocky Mountain (1-1).

Moscow 8, Lakeland 0

The Inland Empire League's defending champs came out strong on Saturday against Lakeland, blanking the Hawks 8-0 in a conference contest.  Moscow (1-0, 1-0)  outshot the Hawks (0-1, 0-1) 26-3 and scored four goals in each half.

Coeur d'Alene 8, Post Falls 0

The Vikings started their 2021 season off with an Inland Empire League victory over Post Falls on Saturday.  The Vikings (1-0, 1-0) racked up 33 shots on goal, while Post Falls (0-1, 0-1) registered one.  Olivia Wyatt scored a hat trick for Coeur d'Alene in the win.
