Inside the Numbers: 4A State Wrestling Meet
Four-time state champion Christopher Martino of Bishop Kelly headlines the 4A field

The 2022 Idaho State Wrestling Championships held at Holt Arena in Pocatello lived up to all of my pre-tournament expectations and much more. It was definitely a barnburner of an event from start to finish.

Unlike last year’s state championships at the Idaho Center in Nampa, which was conducted in just one day with limited fan capacity (a result of COVID protocols), this year’s event was packed to near capacity and highly energetic to say the least, especially during the blood round (round of 12), medal matches, and championship finals. Having come from a single class system (no divisions) in California, my first experience with the two day multiple class (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A/1A, and Girls) state tournament was very exciting, filled with great competition from start to finish, and was well-coordinated and well-run throughout.

This year’s event crowned five new 4x State Champions, including the first in the Girls division. Another nine wrestlers joined the 3x State Champions Club, while seventeen others earned their respective second title. Additionally, twenty-three wrestlers brought home their fourth state medal.

In the team races, Meridian won their second 5A title in a row, while Minico (4A), South Fremont (3A), and Ririe (2A) won their respective divisions. In the Girls division, Eagle won their second state tournament in a row with this year’s title being the first earned in an officially sponsored state event.

Overall, the 2022 Idaho State Wrestling Championships did not disappoint. The following is my comprehensive breakdown of the final state results per each division, including the first officially sponsored Girl’s State Championships.

4A DIVISION

This season marks the 22nd year that the 4A division has been conducted in the state of Idaho. Mirroring the 5A division, the talent is solid from top to bottom and fields several national caliber wrestlers.

The leader is Bishop Kelly’s Christopher Martino at 132s. Winning a rare fourth state title, Martino is a 6x All-American and headed to Princeton University upon graduation. Following in his older brother’s footsteps is frosh standout Mathew Martino. Earning All-American honors at Fargo and with a Folkstyle National title to his credit, Martino dominated his competition this season and is rated among the top incoming freshman in the country.

Joining the 3x State Champions Club is Columbia’s Nico Rodriguez at heavyweights. In the final, Rodriguez (All-American) pinned Century’s Jackson Geslin by fall in the second period to cap off his prep career with four state medals overall (3, 1, 1, 1). Three underclassmen earned their second state title. They include Double Fargo National Champion Mack Mauger (Blackfoot – 106s), Carson Exferd (Nampa – 120s), and Folkstyle All-American Hunter Bidelman of Caldwell.

Other wrestlers to join the 4x State Placers Club include Columbia’s Simon Graeber at 126s (2, 3, 2, 2) and Luke Moore of Blackfoot at 138s (5, 4, 4, 2). Among the fourteen wrestlers to join the 3x State Placers Club include Dedrick Navarro (Nampa, 11, 106s), Simon Alberto-Luna (Nampa, 11, 113s), and Columbia’s Payton Hernandez at 120s. A Fargo All-American last summer, Navarro won a state title in 2020 and two runner-up finishes. Nampa teammate Alberto-Luna is a 3x finalist, winning a title in 2021, while Hernandez has finished runner-up three times. Each are juniors and in position to earn a fourth state medal in 2023.

Other State Champions include Gabe Martinez (Mountain Home, 11, 98s), Aiden Go (Caldwell, 12, 126s), Andrew Choat (Columbia, 12, 145s), Caigun Keller (Preston, 12, 152s), Nakoa Fouret (Columbia, 11, 160s), Tradyn Henderson (Blackfoot, 11, 170s), Luke Arthur (Minico, 12, 182s), Garrett Vail (Minico, 10, 195s), and Payton Gunter (Nampa, 11, 220s).

In the team competition, Minico utilized team depth to capture its first team title since 2018. With two individual champions and fifteen placers overall, Minico outscored state runner-up Nampa by 39.5 points.

Taking a closer look at the 4A state results, 70 out of the 90 wrestlers seeded in the top 6 placed (78%), while seeds 7th/8th had 10 placers (11%), followed by non-seeds with 10 (11%). The lowest seed to win an individual state title was #7 Andrew Choate of Columbia at 145s. Additionally, the total number of No. 2 wrestlers to place at state was 5 (6%) and incoming freshman placers at 13 (14%).
