For the past several years, the girls division has conducted an open state tournament, but in 2022 the Idaho High School Activities Association (IHSAA) officially sponsored the sport and held the girls competition in the same venue as the boys. Since the first open tournament in 2019, girl’s wrestling in Idaho has been growing at an exponential rate and is experiencing greater interest at the grassroots and middle school grades.

The top returning wrestlers this season are three-time state champions Olivia Woods (Eagle) and Alyssa Randles of Coeur d’ Alene, a five-time All-American. Other returning state champions include Allistar Dillow (American Falls, Jr.), Skyla Zimmerman (Moscow, Sr.), Kandence Beck (Highland, Sr.), Lindi Kessinger (Orofino, Jr.), five-time All-American Mia Furman (Rocky Mountain, Sr.), Clare Waite (Boise, Jr.), Hallie Campbell (Columbia, Sr.), and Reece Woods (Eagle, Sr.). Overall, six wrestlers are in position to earn a fourth state medal, three vying for a third, and forty-eight others returning with one state medal.

A positive leading indicator that Idaho is not only growing at an exponential rate in its infancy as a sport, but concurrently producing several nationally ranked wrestlers in the process. This is a positive trend that should be noted and I hope to observe continue in the years to come. As of the November 14th ranking by USA Wrestling, Flo Wrestling, and National Hall of Fame and Museum, nine Idaho wrestlers were recognized in the top 25 weight-by-weight rankings. They include Joely Slyter (Lewiston, Soph.), Kandence Beck (Highland, Sr.), Skyla Zimmerman (Moscow, Sr.), Alyssa Randles (Coeur d’ Alene, Sr.), Mia Furman (Rocky Mountain, Sr.), Clare Waite (Boise, Jr.), Amie Hartman (Mountain Home, Soph.), and Olivia Woods (Eagle, Sr.).
