NORTH STAR LEAGUE

Mullan/St. Regis 20, Clark Fork 12

We’re going to fast forward to the final four minutes of regulation.  Mullan/St. Regis (3-0, 5-0) held a slim 14-12 lead over Clark Fork (1-3, 2-3).  The Wampus Cats had just scored on a passing touchdown from Chase Sanroman to Everett Montgomery, and decided to go for an onside kick.  Clark Fork recovered, and drove into the Tigers’ red zone.  As time was dwindling down, a costly fumble was recovered by Mullan/St. Regis, and from there, the Tigers drove down the field and punched it in with two minutes to play.  The Wampus Cats couldn’t recover, and Mullan/St. Regis won a nail-biter 20-12.

WHITEPINE LEAGUE

Deary 36, Timberline 12

Deary (1-0, 3-2) used big plays to wins its league opener.  Tucker Ashmead completed 5-of-8 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 58 yards and a score, and registered eight tackles and an interception on defense.  TJ Beyer and Jacob Meckling caught Deary’s touchdowns, while Dallen Stapleton and Blaine Clark scored on the ground.  Korbin Christopherson rushed for a touchdown and threw a TD for Timberline (0-1, 1-4).

LONG PIN CONFERENCE

Horseshoe Bend 44, Salmon River 18

Horseshoe Bend (1-1, 4-2) were led by thoroughbreds Trey Bauer and Kaelun Jones in a league win over Salmon River (0-3, 0-5).  Bauer rushed for 179 yards and four touchdowns, while Jones added 180 yards and a score.  On defense, Jones racked up 16 tackles, while Bauer registered 13 stops.

SAWTOOTH CONFERENCE

Camas County 59, Hansen 6

Troy Smith took a kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown to open the scoring for Camas County (1-0, 3-1) and the Mushers raced ahead from there.  In addition to his kick return, Troy Smith rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown, had 35 yards receiving with a score, and led the defense with nine tackles.  Tristen Smith was a perfect 11-of-11 for 106 yards and four touchdowns.  Emmett Palan was his top target with four grabs for 51 yards and two TDs, while Trevor Tews also caught a touchdown pass.  Tyson Tupper added 63 yards rushing with a score, and Zack Pittock found the end zone on the ground, also.  Hansen (0-1, 0-4) scored on a 95-yard kickoff return by Ricardo Gomez.

Hagerman 34, Dietrich 6

Hagerman (1-0, 4-1) sent a strong message to everyone in the Sawtooth Conference with a dismantling of defending league champion Dietrich (0-1, 2-2).  The Pirates scored all of their touchdowns on the ground.  Wyatt Mavencamp and Martin Gonzalez each found the end zone twice, while Wyatt Hoskovec also scored.

Castleford 52, Shoshone 24

Castleford (1-0, 2-2) won their league opener over Shoshone (0-1, 0-4).

ROCKY MOUNTAIN CONFERENCE

Rockland 60, Watersprings 8

Teague Matthews put on a show again for the Bulldogs (1-0, 3-2) in their league opener against Watersprings (0-1, 2-3).  Matthews rushed for 168 yard and four touchdowns, threw for 133 yards and three scores, and made five tackles on defense.

NON-CONFERENCE

Wallace 20, Troy (MT) 12

Wallace (2-3) was supposed to play Kootenai, but the Warriors canceled their season due to low numbers.  That left the Miners scrambling.  Not only did they pick up a Montana opponent, the Troy Trojans, but Troy agreed to travel to Wallace for the contest as well.  In a hard-fought battle, the Miners came away victorious, thanks to junior Julian Davis, who found the end zone twice.

Lewis County 48, Lakeside 0

Gage Crow returned the opening kickoff 72 yards for a score, and went on to find the end zone six more times for Lewis County (2-3) in a Homecoming win over Lakeside (3-2).

Butte County 40, Council 6

The Class 1AD1 Pirates (5-0) scored the first forty points in a non-conference win over Class 1AD2 Council (2-3), in a game played on Saturday evening at Homedale High School.  Razor Duke was a perfect 4-for-4 passing for 96 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for 88 yards and two TDs.  Brody Westergard added 53 yards rushing with two scores, and caught a touchdown pass.  Koden Krosch caught the other.

North Gem 50, Richfield 24

North Gem (3-2) rushed for 469 yards as a team in the non-conference win.  Craig Yost totaled 205 yards and two touchdowns, while Rusty Hatch added 180 yards and a pair of TDs.  Lukky Welker also scored twice, while Jack Perry found the end zone, as well.  Yost led the Cowboys defense with 11 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  For Richfield (1-3), Justin Telford rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns, while Jace Fuchs was 6-of-8 passing for 143 yards and two scores.

Mackay 28, Challis 22

Class 1AD2 Mackay (3-1) built up a lead, then made just enough plays on defense to earn a hard-fought win over Class 1AD1 Challis (1-3).

The game started inauspiciously, as both sides threw interceptions on their opening offensive possessions.  The Miners finally settled in and scored on a three-yard run from Paylen Bruley.  The two-point try failed, and Mackay led 6-0 in the first quarter.

The lead was short lived, as Challis’ Cade Beason returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a TD.  The Vikings ran in the two-point conversion, and led 8-6.

The lead stayed that way until two minutes remained in the first half.  That’s when Bruley hit Chance Brower for a 19-yard touchdown.  Graisyn Chandler ran in the conversion, and the Miners led at halftime 14-8.

Chandler then scored on a three-yard run on Mackay’s opening possession of the third quarter, and the Miners extended the lead to 20-8.

But again, Challis answered.  With three and half minutes to play in the third, Teage Erickson threw a ten-yard touchdown to Jaiden Wright.  Erickson ran in the two-point conversion, and the Vikings were within 20-16.

Challis had the ball to start the fourth quarter, but the Vikings fumbled and Jaxx Esplin recovered.  That led to a three-yard TD from Taysen Bruley to Paylen Bruley, and Mackay led 28-16.

Again, Challis answered, as Rigin Dixon scored on a five-yard run.  Dixon was denied on the two-point try, though, which left Challis’ deficit at 28-22.

After a defensive stop, Challis had one final chance to try and win the game.  But with just over two minutes to play, the Vikings fumbled again.  Mackay’s Lucas Hulse made the recovery, and the Miners escaped with a 28-22 win.
