Welcome to "Heavy Hitters", where each week, we'll highlight the top hitting performances across baseball and softball diamonds around the state of Idaho.
We will select one hitting performance for each day of the week. Think of it as the best hitting line for that particular day.
Because the season began on a Wednesday, this weekly rundown will cover the previous week's Wednesday through Tuesday action.
If you'd like to nominate a Heavy Hitter, send an email to brandon@idahosports.com.
Without further ado, let's get to it!
BASEBALL
Luke Steinmeyer, Marsing (Wednesday, April 23)
Steinmeyer went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs, three runs scored and two stolen bases as the Huskies outslugged Western Idaho Conference rival New Plymouth, 18-11.
Jay Marshall, Potlatch (Thursday, April 24)
One week earlier (to the day), Potlatch's Logan Carpenter drilled two home runs and earned a spot on our Heavy Hitters list. One week later, and his teammate Jay Marshall did the same. Marshall went 3-for-3 with two home runs, four RBIs, three runs, a walk and a stolen base in Potlatch's 15-5 Whitepine League victory over Lapwai.
Rowan Tyler, Troy (Friday, April 25)
Playing eight games in essentially eight days, Troy's pitching was tested over the past week, and the Trojans needed to win a few high-scoring affairs as a result. In a 17-8 Whitepine League win over Clearwater Valley, the bats did just that. Tyler led the way, finishing 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.
Deegan Prince, Wendell (Saturday, April 26)
Prince was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two singles in the Trojans' 21-2 win over Garden Valley. Prince added five RBIs, three runs scored, two walks and a stolen base to his total line.
Makhi Durrett, Troy (Monday, April 28)
Troy earned another victory on the strength of its bats, as Durrett and company powered the Trojans to a 12-2 win over Lapwai in their Whitepine League finale. Durrett went 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored.
Max Vidlak, Fruitland (Tuesday, April 29)
On the surface, Vidlak's final line of 1-for-2 with a solo home run may not look that impressive. But postseason results add weight, especially in a low-scoring district tournament semifinal. Vidlak's homer put Homedale on the defensive, and Fruitland ended up earning a tight 3-1 win.
SOFTBALL
Grace Heiner, North Fremont (Wednesday, April 23)
Heiner homered twice as part of a 4-for-5 day overall as North Fremont sprinted past Nuclear Conference foe West Jefferson, 18-7. Heiner finished with six RBIs and three runs scored.
Ashland Schnell, Lewiston (Thursday, April 24)
Schnell also homered twice in the Bengals' 23-5 win over Moscow in Inland Empire League play. Schnell went 4-for-4 and added a double and a single to the two home runs. She finished with nine RBIs and three runs scored.
Gabby Gillette, Garden Valley (Friday, April 25)
Gillette did a little bit of everything in the Wolverines' 30-20 win over Rimrock in Western Idaho Conference play. Gillette hit for the cycle as part of a 5-for-5 day: one home run, two triples, a double and a single. She also drove in eight runs, scored five times herself, and also reached via a walk. Perhaps most impressively, though, was Gillette's six stolen bases.
Hayley McNeal, Potlatch (Saturday, April 26)
Potlatch turned back Whitepine League rival Prairie 31-6, and McNeal's 4-for-4 line was a big reason why. McNeal finished with a home run, two doubles, four RBIs, four runs scored, a walk and three stolen bases.
Riglee Peterson, Malad (Monday, April 28)
Peterson went 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs, two runs scored, and a walk in the Dragons' 5-4 win over Bonneville.
Layla Gugino, Lake City (Tuesday, April 29)
Gugino was a perfect 3-for-3 with a home run , a double, and a single in Lake City's 15-1 triumph over Timberlake. Gugino finished with six RBIs, two runs scored and a sacrifice fly.
