Malad won their second consecutive state championship (and fourth overall) in a narrow battle with Ririe.  The Dragons compiled 211.5 points, while the Bulldogs finished with 194.  At the 3A State Tournament, Malad boasted three state champions and eleven placers overall.  Both numbers were the best among 3A teams.

Junior Jack Willie (106 lbs.), sophomore Drake Morrison (150 lbs.) and North Fremont transfer and senior Orrin Miller (285 lbs.) all claimed their first individual championships.  Willie and Miller each finally finished on top after placing three times in four years overall.  Each finished second at last year’s state tournament.

Porter Mills also became a three-time placer at 132 pounds, finishing sixth overall in that weight class.   Gabe Hooste was Malad’s highest-placing non-champion, as he finished third overall at 175 pounds.  As a bonus, Malad also won the academic championship for 3A wrestling in 2025.

Grace Lutheran is one of Idaho’s smallest high schools in terms of enrollment, with just 70 total students.  The private Lutheran school in Pocatello has slowly been building something special in volleyball, though, despite low numbers overall.  For example, this year’s team featured eight players total, and yet, the Royals delivered the first state championship of any kind in Grace Lutheran history.

Their championship season was fueled by a disappointing finish in 2023.  After entering the 1A State Tournament with an undefeated record, the Royals were tripped up and had to settle for third place.

In 2024, after dispatching traditional rivals Rockland and Mackay at the district tournament, the Royals faced a much larger task: taking down three-time defending state champion Horseshoe Bend.  Grace Lutheran not only accomplished the feat during the undefeated semifinal, but when the Mustangs battled back through the consolation rounds, Grace Lutheran dropped Horseshoe Bend again in the championship match.
