Ivan Ivanov of Eagle High poses with his coaches after winning a Fargo National Championship and the Outstanding Wrestler Award

Team Idaho delivered another solid performance at the 2025 16U/Junior Nationals (Fargo Nationals), marking the 32nd straight year the competition has taken place at the Fargo Dome on the North Dakota State University campus. The tournament, originating in 1971 at the University of Iowa's Fieldhouse as a Junior-level event, has witnessed substantial growth over the years. A key factor in this expansion has been the introduction of women’s divisions in the mid-2000s. With entries reaching a new high of 8,531 in 2025, up from over 7,000 in 2023, the caliber of competition in all divisions is at its peak. It's well known that girls' wrestling is the fastest-growing sport at both grassroots and high school in addition to collegiate and international levels. This trend is particularly noticeable at Fargo, where the 16U and Junior Women's divisions have seen the most significant increases, with the Junior division growing by 7% and the 16U division by approximately 23% since the previous year. To sum it up, Fargo is among the largest age group tournaments in the world and a sneak preview of future NCAA Champions, All-Americans and Olympians.

2025 REGISTERED WRESTLER COUNT PER USA WRESTLING (% increase since 2024)

  • Junior Freestyle (M): 1,887 (~4%)
  • Junior Greco-Roman (M): 1,339 (2%)
  • 16U Freestyle (M): 1,786 (5%)
  • 16U Greco-Roman (M): 1,274 (1%)
  • Junior Freestyle (W): 1,216 (7%)
  • 16U Freestyle (W): 1,029 (~23%)

TOTAL: 8,531 (~6%)

The period since 2020 has coincided with extraordinary growth for Team Idaho wrestling. Compared to the prior decade's average of roughly 13 All-Americans (all divisions), Team Idaho's performance has been exceptional. This includes record-breaking numbers such as 24 All-Americans in 2021 and 21 in 2022. Even with 19 All-Americans in 2023, the team's first Junior Greco-Roman national title, fueled by a record 10 All-Americans in that division, solidified its elevated status.

This year, the Gem State wrestlers fielded a sizable team at the championships, demonstrating their prowess on the national stage. They brought home a total of 16 All-Americans, a figure slightly above the average for all divisions over the past decade. Furthermore, a notable first for Team Idaho was securing a runner-up position in the 16U Greco category, with two champions and five All-Americans in that division alone.

Matthew Martino, an honor graduate of Bishop Kelly, showcased an impressive senior year, adding two more Fargo All-American accolades to his already decorated resume. After previously earning two All-American honors, Martino placed third in Freestyle and captured his first Fargo championship (aka, Stop Sign) in Greco. His four All-American honors contribute to his family's legacy, as he and his older brother Christopher have a combined 10 All-American honors, the second-highest in Idaho history. Martino is set to join his brother and further his education and wrestling career at Princeton University.

Prep standouts Saxton Scott of Idaho Falls and Boden Banta of South Fremont are among the Junior Greco All-Americans poised for collegiate wrestling careers. Scott, a 16U Fargo Greco champion in 2023 who also earned Outstanding Wrestler honors that year, concluded his high school wrestling career with a third All-American recognition, and will continue wrestling at Cal State Bakersfield. Banta, a teammate of Scott in the same weight group, secured a solid third-place finish and a third Fargo All-American honor overall. He is set to join the program at the University of Providence in Montana.

Brand'n Edstrom of Madison High School achieved a historic milestone, becoming the school's first wrestler to earn All-American honors in the 16U Freestyle division. Team Idaho excelled in the 16U Greco division, securing five All-American accolades, including two individual championships and three finalists. Ivan Ivanov of Suples (Eagle HS) spearheaded this impressive performance, dominating his competition to claim another Fargo title and his second 'Outstanding Wrestler' award, solidifying his position among the nation's top young Greco wrestlers. Also securing a Fargo championship was Mountain View's Gage Ponton, a junior poised to be a dominant heavyweight in the coming years. Bishop Kelly’s Holton Crane, finalist Blake Nevils (Meridian), and Greyson Packer of South Fremont also earned All-American recognition, with Packer joining his brother Jaxton, a multiple Fargo All-American now wrestling for the University of Sioux Falls.

Team Idaho's women's wrestling program is experiencing a surge in participation, with their 16U/Junior divisions sending over sixty wrestlers to Fargo. This growing involvement, coupled with strong national performances, signals Idaho's increasing prominence in the sport. A notable achievement includes Team Idaho reaching the championship finals at the National Duals (Greco), securing a runner-up finish after a close contest against wrestling powerhouse California. At the Fargo competition, the Idaho team achieved a significant milestone, with three wrestlers in each of the 16U and Junior divisions earning All-American status. Amie Hartman, a returning All-American from Mountain Home and known for wearing her signature Stetson-style cowboy hat, was particularly successful, achieving her long-held ambition of capturing the Junior division’s Fargo National Championship after placing third in 2023. Joely Slyter of Lewiston, recognized as a leading lightweight nationally, secured her fourth All-American honor, and Elise Twait of Meridian, overcoming a challenging pool of competitors, earned her initial All-American honor. All graduating seniors, Amie Hartman is heading to Dickinson State while Joely Slater and Elise Twait are set to continue their academic and wrestling careers at the University of Providence.

In the 16U division, Olivia Bezdicek of Jerome achieved her second Fargo All-American honor by placing runner-up in the 130-pound weight class. In addition, two other Idaho wrestlers earned their first All-American honors: Ali Svancara of Buhl and Molly Olague of Skyline. Idaho's wrestling landscape is being shaped by these exceptional young athletes, who are serving as role models for aspiring competitors.

Post Fargo competition, I had the opportunity to discuss Team Idaho’s performance with Chris Owens, the Director of Wrestling Operations for Idaho USA Wrestling. He stated, "The gains made by this year's Fargo team were truly outstanding, with each wrestler, particularly those who committed to the 16U/Junior Duals, Turf Wars Duals, and Fargo prep camp, showing incredible dedication and skill advancement. The summer achievements are something to be proud of, and the team is eager to see continued growth. A huge thank you to the coaching staff this year, who were instrumental in shaping this special group."

In closing, the state of Idaho continues to make a big statement on the national scene. Case in point, for the last several years Idaho has produced a solid number of All-Americans annually at Fargo, Folkstyle Nationals, and other national level events. From my first experience observing the wrestling scene in Idaho nearly five years ago, I could feel it in the air that something special was happening here. The wrestling culture in the Gem State is growing and from my observation is solidifying into a system that any wrestler willing to embrace the “Process” is more than capable of reaching their full potential at the highest of levels. I want to give a “thumbs up” to Chris Owens, Ivan Ivanov of Suples, the coaching staff and volunteers involved with Team Idaho, as well as a job well done for each and every Idaho wrestler that competed at the Fargo Nationals. Recognition goes to the incredible talent and dedication of former Fargo National Champions Aden Attao (Borah HS/Oregon State) and Shilo Jones (Mountain View HS/North Dakota State), who have successfully earned places on this year's U20 and U23 World Teams, respectively. Outstanding effort!

Below is a list of 2025 All-Americans per division and Fargo statistics dating back to 1980. A huge “THANK YOU” to Jason Bryant, one of the top journalists and promoters of wrestling in the country for his hard work and commitment to compile the entire history of the Fargo National Championships. Accordingly, I would not have been able to accurately compile Idaho’s history without having access to his work. WE’RE ONE IDAHO!
