Welcome to the second year of Breaking the Tape, which will publish weekly each Tuesday throughout cross country season.

We are two weeks into the 2025 season and much has already happened.

Early Rankings, Records And Victories

Three Idaho teams made DyeStat.com's Northwest Regional Early Season Rankings published Sept. 4. Boise was ranked No. 1 and Rocky Mountain No. 4 in the girls rankings while Timberline was listed among five Northwest girls team to watch. In the boys rankings, Coeur d'Alene is No. 2 while Rocky Mountain, Boise, Eagle and Mountain View were mentioned among the 10 teams to watch. Rocky Mountain and Coeur d'Alene won last year's Nike Cross Northwest Regionals girls and boys titles, respectively, while the Timberline girls placed third. Rocky Mountain's girls and Boise's girls have won all three meets they've competed in thus far this season. The Coeur d'Alene boys began their season on Sept. 6 by winning the Timberlake Farragut Invitational at Farragut State Park, with junior Wyatt Carr winning the individual title in 15:36.70.

Plenty of Idaho runners have already achieved personal bests. Rocky Mountain senior Hyrum Tuft is the first Idaho boy this season to break 15:30, running a personal best 15:11.5 to win the Caldwell Twilight on Sept. 4. Tuft, who has won two consecutive meets, led the Grizzlies to the team title with 32 points, an 88-point margin over Timberline.

Last year, only Meridian's Paisley Taylor and Boise's Audrey Orme and Lucy Spiess were the only Idaho girls to break 18 minutes for the 5k by the end of the season. Two weeks into the 2025 cross country season, four girls have already broken 18 minutes. Boise senior Audrey Orme was the first, running 17:54.77 to win the Jimmy Driscoll Invitational on Aug. 30. Three more ran sub-18 on Sept. 4 at the Caldwell Twilight, finishing 1-2-3: Rocky Mountain senior Hallie Heemeyer in a meet record and personal record 17:30.72 (breaking the previous meet record of 17:49.90 by Boise's Emily Hamlin from 2014), Twin Falls junior Raelee Richardson in second in a personal record 17:49.91 and Rocky Mountain junior Brooke Thompson in third in a personal best 17:50.41. Heemeyer, who has won three consecutive meets, led the Grizzlies to the team title with a score of 39 points, a 16-point victory margin over Timberline.

Orme's most recent win was the at the annual Cardinal Classic on Sept. 6 at Kelly Park in Soda Springs in a meet record 18:34.42, breaking the previous meet record (and course record) of 18:40.7 by Mountain View's Lexy Halladay in 2019. Boise won the varsity girls team title with a score of 25 points and a 128-point victory margin.

The Cardinal Classic varsity boys individual title went to Rigby junior Jonas Porter in 16:08.87, leading the Trojans to the team title with 96 points.
