This tenth installment of "Mat Chat," which debuted in 2022, features Roy Perales, the respected head wrestling coach at Nampa High School. With more than three decades dedicated to the Bulldog program as both an athlete and coach, Perales's commitment to wrestling has had a notable influence both within and beyond Idaho.

The Nampa High wrestling program has a long and distinguished history, which traces its origins to Roy Needs' third-place medal in the 155-pound division in 1971 (It should be noted that Nampa's inaugural state-level point occurred during the 1967 Class A state championships). This accomplishment not only established a benchmark for subsequent athletes, but also initiated the Bulldogs' uninterrupted run of state medals.

Under the leadership of legendary Hall of Fame coach Rollie Lane, Nampa High's wrestling program achieved powerhouse status from the 1970s to the early 1990s, winning multiple state individual and team championships. Following Lane's tenure, the program continued to produce state placers, including four top-four team finishes in the early to mid-2000s. Excluding 1999 and 2000, Nampa has secured at least one state medal annually since 1971, accumulating a total of 245 medals, 48 individual state titles, four team titles, and 21 top-four overall team finishes.

Coach Perales, who took the helm of the wrestling program in 2019, has ignited a period of significant growth. His foundational work with athletes at the youth level, coupled with his coaching staff's dedication, has cultivated a strong talent pipeline, consistently developing state champions, placers, and All-Americans who advance to collegiate wrestling. A testament to his hard work and steadfast dedication, he was nominated several times as the 4A Coach of the Year and was recognized with multiple South Idaho Conference (SIC) awards. Under his leadership, the program has achieved remarkable success, including:

  • 5 State Trophies: Demonstrating consistent excellence at the highest level of competition.
  • 51 State Medals: Representing a significant 21% of the program's total medals since 1971.
  • 12 Individual State Titles: Account for 25% of all individual titles in the program's history since 1971.

His guidance was pivotal in the achievements of athletes like four-time state champion Carson Exferd and two-time state champ Dedrick Navarro, both prep-level All-Americans now competing in the prestigious Big Ten conference for the University of Wisconsin (Exferd) and Northwestern (Navarro), respectively. He also coached his son, Mikel, a two-time state champion who went on to become the program's sole collegiate All-American at Menlo College (NAIA).

“We are going to continue to change lives using wrestling as the vehicle to develop young men and women. That will always be the objective as long as I’m the head Coach.”

  • Roy Perales, Head Coach

The strength of Coach Perales's leadership is complemented by his coaching staff, which is distinguished by exceptional prep accolades and prior collegiate experience. According to Nathan Navarro, a long-time coach with Perales and Oregon State alumni, “This is year number seven coaching with Roy as the head coach. It’s nice to coach with him because we have the same philosophy and same passion. The kids we have, for the most part, are our kids. We’ve coached them since they were little and we take pride in that.”

From the mat to the head coach's chair, Roy Perales has witnessed Nampa High School's wrestling program from every angle. A two-time state placer for the Bulldogs in the mid-1990s, he now leads the charge as head coach, shaping the next generation of competitors. In this profile (Q&A), we trace Perales' remarkable journey, exploring his unique perspective on the team's storied past, present resurgence, and future ambitions. This deep dive also includes a statistical history of Nampa wrestling, featuring the program's state placers, champions, and top teams.

MAT CHAT SERIES

Q&A With Nampa’s Head Coach Roy Perales

How did you first get involved in the sport of wrestling?

COACH PERALES – I had a PE teacher by the Name of Dan Merritt at Heyburn Elementary that introduced Wrestling to our PE Class in the first grade. He then turned us over to “The Minico Coaches” and away we went. My Mother was very supportive and kept me involved from then on.

Who has been your biggest influence in wrestling?

COACH PERALES – I’ve had so many people that influenced me; Teammates, Coaches, and even people I did not know, but just watched compete. I don’t think I could only name one but, I think more than anyone it was Teammates and Coaches at every level I competed at.

What led you to pursue coaching at the high school level, and what impact do you hope to have on your athletes?

COACH PERALES From a young age I knew I wanted to be a coach. As I started coaching early in my 20’s I really wanted to be a high school coach. As Life moved on and changed, It wasn’t really something I wanted to do in my 30’s. I was content with coaching club wrestling because I love wrestling and got my fill developing kids. As my first group of 4-year-olds got to high school the job at Nampa opened and I felt like it was a calling to apply for the job.- The impact I hope to have on my team is how to be a good human, how to love and respect those around us, and the importance of hard work to achieve goals.

How many years have you coached wrestling at Nampa High School? Did you coach prior to coaching at Nampa?

COACH PERALES – I’ve been a Nampa Bulldog at some level since 1991. That is when my family settled in Nampa…I was in 8th grade.  I was gone for 5 years in college and have been back since the 2002 School year. My first year as a Coach was 1999 at Kraxberger Middle School in Gladstone, Oregon. I wrestled at Clackamas Community College and was hurt and took the job with a teammate at a local middle school that needed help. I moved home in the summer of 1999 and was an Assistant Coach at Nampa for that season. My wife, son and I moved to Moscow Idaho to finish school the 2000-01 school year and I got a job at Potlatch Middle and High School for two seasons. In 2002 We were home for Good and I was a Coach at West Middle School in Nampa as well as an assistant Coach at Boise High School for 3 seasons. I’ve been at Nampa since 2002 as an assistant  or head coach all levels of the program.

Can you elaborate on your experience at Nampa High School?

COACH PERALES – My experience at Nampa Has been unbelievable. Being a part of the Bulldog family for most of my life, I have so much support from the community and Alumni. The support I get from the Administration, the school board on down is humbling. Because of this, I believe we have been able to build and maintain a healthy program that students can thrive in. Often times during the day I feel humbled that our wrestlers believe in me as their leader the way they do. I feel the same about our parents and alumni. So many people pour their hearts and souls into the program that I am blessed to lead, it is very humbling and motivating.

Tell me more about the coaching staff at Nampa High School, including their individual roles and how they contribute to the successful wrestling program.

COACH PERALES  In my opinion my Staff is as good as any in the West. I am so blessed to have all these guys in my corner. Every head coach’s dream is to have a group of guys that are as loyal as these guys. Corey Caywood, Nathan Navarro and I have been coaching together since 2002 as assistants on Wally Lester Staff. Not only are these guy family to me, They can also coach Wrestling at a very high level. I have 9 Coaches on my staff including myself. Eight wrestled in college and Wally Lester is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. I feel like we “get it” as a staff. These guys are wonderful coaches, but even better men. They are what every parent should want to mentor their children. They are good husbands, fathers, and coaches. Having my son, who is in the corporate world make adjustments to his life and career to help me is huge win as a dad. I love that he still loves the sport with his dad and chooses to be there for me.

2025-’26 COACHING STAFF:

  • Roy Perales (Clackamas College)
  • Nathan Navarro (Oregon State University)
  • Corey Caywood (Clackamas College/ Boise State)
  • Mikel Perales (Arizona State/ Menlo College), Conference Champion/NAIA All-American
  • Max Miller (Minot State/ Southern Oregon)
  • Afton Silvis (Menlo College)
  • Joey Barsotti (MSU Northern)
  • Anthony Ramirez (South West Oregon CC)
  • Walter Lester (Head wrestling coach at NHS, 1997-2014), 2019 Hall-of-Fame Inductee

What life lesson have you learned in wrestling that apply in your day-to-day life?

COACH PERALES –  RESILIANCE! As a business owner, the resilience and mental toughness that wrestling taught me is the reason I have been successful in my life. I don’t know how to quit, I never have. As a wrestler, I was never allowed to quit or feel sorry for myself.

What advice would you give a young athlete wanting to be successful in wrestling?

COACH PERALES –  To fall in love for wrestling for themselves and no one else. Wrestling is hard and can be lonely. When you love it for your own reasons, it’s so much easier to navigate. If you do it for someone else, it’s hard to be successful.

Given Nampa High School's wrestling tradition and its many accomplished athletes, what is the history of the program, highlighting its most successful wrestlers, former coaches, and any unique aspects or memorable moments?

COACH PERALES – Nampa has a rich history since the early 70’s. I’d say more years than not, Nampa wrestling was in the mix. We have State Champions and state placers about every year. I’ve been blessed to be a part of some good teams and be around many great wrestlers. I don’t know if I have one memorable moment as I have many. One that is fresh in mind is this past season. We had such a tough season with injuries, illness, and bad luck. Most wrote us off, I even overheard a coach say we were no longer the same without some guys (I won’t name names). At the State Tournament our kids decided to be Nampa boys and find a way to bring home a trophy for the 5th straight year. That was special. All the kids that signed NLI to wrestle at the next level including 2 to the big ten is also very special. I won’t name individual wrestlers because we have so many special wrestlers and I can’t name them all. Wrestling fans know who they are. The truth is, every wrestler that has been on any of my rosters holds a very special place in my heart. I feel good knowing that they all know that.

What are your interests outside of wrestling?

COACH PERALES – I love spending time with my wife Kristi and my 3 children, I’m very excited that I will soon have a granddaughter to spoil the rest of my life. When I’m not with my family, I love to play golf, hunt and fish.

Can you outline the specific objectives the Nampa program aims to achieve in the future?

COACH PERALES –  We are going to continue to change lives using wrestling as the vehicle to develop young men and women. That will always be the objective as long as I’m the head Coach. On the competitive side, we will continue to improve as a program by working hard and learning from one another. I have found that just focusing on the journey and not results will always get you results.
