Welcome to Baney's Basketball Breakdown, a weekly reset that allows all of us to catch our breath and reflect on the past week of high school competition. There will be lots to digest below, so let's get to it!
OPENING TIP
I know that we're two weeks into the season now, but last week truly felt like the first week of competition in Idaho. I guess that's because there were so many excellent tournaments throughout the state. The Owyhee boys, defending 6A state champions, finally made their season debut at their Pro Image Sports Classic, which they've hosted for three seasons now. The Storm dispatched Damien (California) 53-47 in the semifinals (and their season debut), tahnks to Logan Haustveit's 24 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Then, in the championship, Owyhee fell to Utah powerhouse Layton Christian by a single possession, 67-65. Haustveit had 21 points while Canaan Magness added 18. In a funny twist, Owyhee and Damian (CA) are schedule to appear at the same tournament again this year. Between Christmas and New Year's, Owyhee will travel to Damien High's own tournament, the Classic at Damien.
GAME OF THE WEEK
Class 2A Butte County and Class 1A Rockland battled in an epic semifinal showdown at the Ririe Bulldog Shootout on Friday, December 12. Butte County (4-2) led at the end of three quarters, 49-41, but Rockland quickly erased that deficit, climbing to within one possession midway through the fourth. Trailing 58-55, the Bulldogs tied the contest on a three-point shot on the right wing by Woodrow Lowder. The shot came with 25 seconds remaining, and sent the game to overtime, tied at 58-58. In OT, Rockland again trailed, 62-60, inside of a minute to play. But with 26 seconds to go, Xavier Parrish sank two free throws to tie the game at 62-62. But Butte County saved the best for last. Taking the ball out of bounds in front of their bench with just four seconds to play, the Pirates scored on a basket inside as time expired to earn the win, 64-62.
