Welcome to "Primetime Pitchers", where each week, we'll highlight the top pitching performances across baseball and softball diamonds around the state of Idaho.
We will select one pitching performance for each day of the week. Think of it as the best pitching line for that particular day.
If you'd like to nominate a Primetime Pitcher, send an email to brandon@idahosports.com.
Without further ado, let's get to it!
BASEBALL
Eli Pakeur, 11, Salmon (Wednesday, March 11)
Salmon started the season off right, with a 10-0 shutout win over Declo. Pakeur went the distance, tossing five innings of one-hit ball. He struck out 12 Hornets and walked none.
Jake Weske, 12, Boise and Seth Hassinger, 11, Boise (Thursday, March 12)
This dynamic duo combined for a no-hitter in Boise's 13-3 win over Caldwell. How can you throw a no-hitter and still give up three runs? Walks. Weske went four innings, and yielded two runs on three walks. The senior also struck out nine hitters. Hassinger finished the contest with one inning, and yielded one unearned run on an error and a walk. Two of his three outs came via strikeout.
Brody Cowger, 11, Lighthouse Christian and Korbin Hyink, 10, Lighthouse Christian (Friday, March 13)
Another day, another combined no-hitter, but this one came with a shutout, as the Lions raced past Glenns Ferry 15-0. Cowger threw four innings, and struck out nine while walking three. Hyink pitched one clean inning to wrap up the game, and struck out the side.
Ike Redder, 12, Burley (Saturday, March 14)
A lot of early-season complete game performances come in five or even four innings as games are shortened due to the run rule. But Burley's standout senior delivered a true complete game victory in the Bobcats' 5-1 win over Malad. Redder pitched seven innings, and allowed one run on three hits. He struck out five and walked none.
SOFTBALL
Hailey Brennan, 11, Owyhee (Wednesday, March 11)
Brennan was one of Idaho's top hurlers last year as a sophomore, and the Storm standout picked up right where she left off, delivering a one-hitter in a season opening 10-0 shutout of Eagle. She struck out ten Mustangs, while walking just two.
Kendal Holloway, 9, Ridgevue (Thursday, March 12)
A single walk was the only difference between a no-hitter and a perfect game for Ridgevue's young pitcher. In an 18-0 win over Columbia, Holloway turned in five innings of no-hit ball, with 13 strikeouts and one walk.
Romy Turpen, 9, Capital (Friday, March 13)
Turpen is our second consecutive freshman to toss a gem, as her triumph came against Columbia as well, this time in a 21-0 victory. She threw five innings of one-hit ball, with ten strikeouts and no walks.
Bristol Runnels, 11, Caldwell (Saturday, March 14)
Caldwell eked out a 2-1 win against Kuna, and Runnels' performance propelled the Cougars to victory. Runnels went the distance, pitching all seven innings. She allowed one run (it was unearned) and scattered four hits across her seven frames of work. Runnels also struck out 19 Kavemen, and walked none.
