WATCH AN ARCHIVE OF THE GAME HERE
52 of Idaho's best high school basketball players dazzled during the 23rd Annual Statewide All-Star Basketball Games, held on Saturday at North Idaho College's Christianson Gymnasium in Coeur d'Alene.
The seniors-only showcase event featured a Team Region vs. Team Metro format. Team Metro consists of players from District 3, while Team Region is comprised of players from every other district. The exception came during the boys' contest, during which, in an effort to even out the number of players on each team, three players from District 6 joined the Metro squad.
The Region girls earned a 102-88 victory over a short-handed Metro team. Two players, Middleton's Zoey Blackwell and Homedale's Tiana Sorenson, had to drop out at the last moment, leaving the Metro girls with just ten players total.
Additionally, Metro's head coach was originally scheduled to be Jeremy Munroe of Eagle, but an emergency prompted him from traveling north to Coeur d'Alene. Sandpoint coach Madi Schoening, who just completed her first season as Sandpoint's head coach and was a former participant in the All-Star Game, stepped in to fill the void.
Oakley's Taylin Beck was named MVP of the girls' contest after finishing with 13 points, which tied Thunder Ridge's Nevaeh Davenport for the team-high total.
Capital's Miriam Stafford led all scorers with 19 points in a losing effort for Team Metro. Salmon River's Rylee Walters added 18.
The Region boys completed the sweep in the second game of the double-header with a 132-125 win. Coeur d'Alene's Caden Symons scored 28 points (22 after halftime) on his way to MVP honors.
Symons' father Corey has been a men's basketball coach at North Idaho College for 22 seasons, and Caden showed a comfort and familiarity with a gym that he has spent countless hours in throughout his life.
Caden Symons also won the Slam Dunk Contest in an extra-session dunk-off with New Plymouth's Ashton Robinson. Each dunker compiled identical scores of 38 from the panel of five judges, which necessitated the extra dunk-off. Symons landed a 46 with his extra attempt, while Robinson finished with a score of 38.
Lapwai's Madden Bisbee and Mountain View's Cooper Patterson each won titles during the Three-Point Shootout. In the "Battle of the Sexes" finale, Patterson triumphed over Bisbee, 12-8, although both athletes still took home trophies.
