At an age when many young athletes are still discovering their identity, Ali Svancara of Buhl High School has already established herself as one of Idaho’s premier young wrestlers. A two-time Fargo All-American, multiple regional champion, and three-time Idaho state medalist, Svancara has become one of the state’s brightest rising stars in girls wrestling. Yet behind the growing list of accomplishments is a humble, hardworking athlete whose success has been built through discipline, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to continual improvement.
A member of the Class of 2027, Svancara has already compiled an outstanding 134-12 high school record while maintaining a 3.8 GPA, demonstrating that excellence in the classroom can go hand in hand with excellence on the wrestling mat. While her résumé continues to grow, those closest to her recognize that her greatest strengths are not only her athletic abilities, but also her character, work ethic, and willingness to challenge herself every day.
Svancara’s wrestling journey began at just seven years old when she discovered the sport through a simple flyer brought home from school. She came home with a Buhl Badger wrestling flyer and immediately asked her parents for the opportunity to try wrestling. After some convincing, they agreed, and what began as an introduction to a new activity quickly became a lifelong passion.
“I first got involved in wrestling when I was 7 years old,” Svancara explained. “I came home from school with a Buhl Badger flyer and begged my parents to let me give it a try. After a lot of convincing, they finally said yes, and I’ve been hooked ever since.”
What started as something she simply wanted to experience became a sport that shaped her identity.
“Wrestling has taught me discipline, resilience, and how to overcome challenges. Looking back, I’m thankful I was given the opportunity to wrestle.”
Throughout her career, Svancara has credited her family and coaches as her greatest influences. Their support, encouragement, and guidance have helped her navigate the challenges of competitive wrestling while maintaining the humility and determination that define her approach.
“My biggest influence has been my family and my coaches,” she said. “They’ve always believed in me, pushed me to improve, and reminded me to stay humble while working toward my goals.”
Success at the highest levels of wrestling requires more than talent. It requires consistency, sacrifice, and a willingness to embrace the daily process of improvement. Svancara’s training reflects that mindset. Her routine consists of wrestling practice, strength training, conditioning, recovery, proper nutrition, and maintaining the discipline necessary to continue improving.
“My daily routine is all about staying disciplined and building on what’s working,” Svancara said. “Honestly, it doesn’t change much—practice, strength training, conditioning, and making sure I recover properly with good nutrition and sleep.”
Despite already achieving significant success, she remains focused on the future.
“I am proud of what I have accomplished so far, but I know there is still more to achieve. My goal right now is to continue to improve every day and finish my high school career on the best note possible.”
Her steady progression throughout high school demonstrates that commitment. After placing fourth at the Idaho State Championships in 2024, Svancara improved to third place in both 2025 and 2026, while capturing three consecutive IHSAA District IV championships. She has also collected major tournament victories, including championships at the Rollie Lane Invitational (2024, 2026) and the Tiger-Grizz Invitational (2024).
On the freestyle stage, Svancara has continued to elevate her performance. She earned the 2024 USA Wrestling Northwest Regional Championship (16U), captured the 2025 Idaho Freestyle State Championship (16U), and followed that performance with championships at the 2026 Western Regional Championships and 2026 Northwest Regional Championships.
However, perhaps her most significant accomplishments have come on the national stage at Fargo.
Earning Fargo All-American status is one of the most prestigious achievements in youth wrestling, requiring athletes to compete against the best wrestlers from across the nation. After becoming a 16U Fargo Freestyle All-American in 2025, Svancara returned in 2026 and earned Junior Fargo Freestyle All-American honors, establishing herself among Idaho’s elite national-level competitors.
According to Svancara, the difference came from both physical preparation and mental growth.
“The biggest difference for me was staying mentally focused and believing in my preparation,” she explained. “I worked hard year-round to improve every part of my wrestling, but I also learned how to stay calm under pressure and take one match at a time, no matter the outcome.”
A major part of her growth has come through seeking out stronger training opportunities. Svancara has regularly traveled from Buhl to Boise to train with motivated partners and challenge herself in a higher-level environment.
“Traveling to Boise to find partners who were motivated—and a coach who challenged me—made a huge impact,” she said. “Earning my second Fargo All-American honor showed me what consistency and discipline can accomplish.”
Buhl High School Head Coach and Idaho National Coach Fred Bartlett has witnessed Svancara’s growth firsthand and believes her success comes from qualities that extend far beyond her accomplishments.
“It’s hard to find the right words for Ali. She’s a special competitor and always has been.
She’s never been one to shy away from the toughest competition—in fact, she seeks it out. She isn’t defined by wins or losses. Instead, she’s constantly looking for ways to improve. Right now, she’s traveling to Boise from Buhl, 2–3 days a week just to train with like-minded girls and Jordan Jimenez because she knows growth happens when you challenge yourself.
After a disappointing high school state tournament, she didn’t sit around feeling sorry for herself. She continued to work.
I’ve always been proud of how hard Ali works, but she’s taken it to another level. She’s become the hardest worker in the room, and the results are showing.
Wrestling is a pretty fair sport. The people who consistently put in the work usually earn the rewards. Those rewards aren’t always measured in medals. It doesn’t mean you win every match, but it does mean you become the best version of yourself.
I think that’s exactly what we’re seeing with Ali. Her best wrestling is still ahead of her, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes her.”

That same commitment has been evident to Jordan Jimenez, Head Coach of Jimenez Trained Academy, who has worked with Svancara during her training trips to Boise. Jimenez has seen firsthand the sacrifices she makes to improve and believes her determination separates her from many athletes.
“Being a part of Ali’s journey has been a great privilege and I’m grateful to have her in our room. It’s rare to find a kid that would be willing to drive 4+ hours round trip every day to seek out training. She is determined, hardworking, very coachable, and brings a great attitude to the room every day. All traits that will carry her through her wrestling career and in life.
Her ceiling both in the sport of wrestling, and in life will be whatever she wants them to be. I’m proud of what she’s done on the mat, and who she is as a person. I’m excited to see her growth and what she accomplishes next. Let’s go Ali girl!”

The words from Bartlett and Jimenez provide a complete picture of what makes Svancara unique. While her accomplishments include Fargo All-American honors, regional championships, state medals, and more than 130 high school victories, those closest to her recognize that her greatest strength is her mindset. She seeks challenges rather than avoiding them, embraces coaching, and understands that improvement comes through consistent effort.
Svancara’s willingness to travel hours each week for better training opportunities reflects the commitment required to compete at the highest levels of wrestling. Her journey demonstrates that success is not simply created through talent—it is built through discipline, sacrifice, and the daily pursuit of becoming better.
Looking ahead, Svancara has aspirations of competing at the collegiate level and continuing her wrestling career beyond high school.
“Competing at the collegiate level is definitely one of my goals,” she said. “I’m working every day to make sure I’m ready for that jump, and I’m excited for the challenge it brings.”
While the world stage remains a future possibility, she understands the importance of focusing on continued development.
“I know I still have a lot to accomplish before I can even think about that level. But if my road ever took me in that direction, I wouldn’t be disappointed. I’d embrace it and give everything I have.”
As one of Idaho’s leading female wrestlers, Svancara has also experienced firsthand the rapid growth of girls wrestling throughout the state. She believes the future is extremely promising.
“Every year, more girls are getting involved, and the level of competition continues to improve,” she said. “I believe Idaho will continue to produce Fargo All-Americans, college wrestlers, and hopefully even future world team members as the sport keeps growing.”
She also believes expanding girls wrestling requires creating opportunities for younger athletes through youth clinics, mentorship, and strong role models.
“If we can show girls that they belong on the mat and give them the guidance they need early on, the future of women’s wrestling will only get stronger.”
The lessons Svancara has learned through wrestling extend far beyond competition. When asked what advice she would give younger wrestlers, her answer reflected the mindset that has guided her own career.
“Stay consistent, trust the process, and don’t let setbacks define you. Everyone loses sometimes, but the people who keep showing up and working hard are the ones who improve the most.”
Her favorite quote summarizes her philosophy perfectly:
“Success isn’t owned—it’s rented, and rent is due every day.”
For Svancara, those words serve as a daily reminder that success must continually be earned.
“It reminds me to stay humble, keep working, and never become satisfied. You have to earn it daily through discipline, consistency, and the way you carry yourself on and off the mat.”
Beyond her own competitive career, Svancara hopes to continue giving back to wrestling through coaching and mentoring.
“Wrestling has given me so much that I’d love to give back by coaching or mentoring younger athletes,” she said. “Helping others reach their goals would be the best gift to give from a gift I’ve received.”
Outside of wrestling, Svancara enjoys spending time with family and friends, fishing, camping, attending concerts, and finding balance away from competition. She believes those moments help her stay mentally refreshed and motivated.
With one high school seasons still remaining, Ali Svancara has already established herself as one of Idaho’s most accomplished young wrestlers. Her résumé includes a 134-12 record, two Fargo All-American honors, three Idaho state medals, three district championships, multiple regional titles, and a 3.8 GPA.
Yet her greatest accomplishment may be the mindset she has developed along the way. Guided by discipline, humility, resilience, and an unmatched work ethic, Svancara represents the future of Idaho girls wrestling. Her journey is still unfolding, and if the words of her coaches are any indication, the best wrestling of Ali Svancara’s career is still ahead.
