Welcome to "Quick Kicks", a weekly snapshot at what's happening across the boys and girls soccer landscape. Enjoy!
BOYS SOCCER
- Undefeated Coeur d’Alene is your new number 1 atop the 6A standings, although their schedule arguably has not been as tough as Mountain View's. The Mavericks had a tough draw this past week against the Eagle Mustangs. Mustangs’ goalkeeper William Wallace had six saves in the 1-1 draw. Look for the Mavericks to respond as they take on third-ranked Boise on September 29.
- Sandpoint and Jerome are battling for the top spot at the 5A ranks. Sandpoint cruised to victories over Moscow and Post Falls. We will learn a lot about the Bulldogs as they take on Coeur d’Alene September 26 in a cross-division clash. Jerome hosts Twin Falls on September 24 in a game. The two played to a draw earlier in the season.
- In an important 4A clash, Wendell hosts Sugar-Salem in a battle of top teams. Wendell will play two games over the next three days leading up to Saturday’s matchup. Sugar-Salem will make its way to American Falls before the matchup with Wendell.
GIRLS SOCCER
- Timberline defeated Rocky Mountain 4-0 on the 16th of September, as they continue to have a stronghold atop the 6A ranks. Rocky Mountain and Middleton played to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night, and Owyhee turned back Mountain View, 1-0. These teams all have similar records and are ranked 3 through 6, so even though we saw movement across these spots after Wednesday’s action, it’s still an incredibly tight bunch of strong teams.
- After drawing with Skyline earlier in the season, Hillcrest showed out Wednesday night in a 2-1 win over the Grizzlies. The win gives Hillcrest a leg up in the 5A standings. Hillcrest plays Pocatello in another key matchup on September 29. Barring something unforeseen, it looks like top-ranked Twin Falls should win their last three remaining contest to stay atop the 5A standings.
- Sugar-Salem suffered its first loss of the season to a good Twin Falls team Wednesday night but remained atop 4A. Fruitland has gone 2-0-2 over the past week, including a draw over a good McCall-Donnelly team. The Eagles of Marsh Valley are a sneaky team in 4A, and they will play at Preston in an important conference matchup on September 28.
