Taking The Trophy
The Crater Bowl. The Wagon Wheel. The Custer Cup. All great rivalry moments and trophies in the Idaho 8-man landscape. One of the originals, the Standlee Trophy, is awarded to the winner of the Glenns Ferry/Valley game each year, and on Friday it went home with Valley after beating the Pilots. The trophy dates back to 1992 and honors Lynn and Kathy Standlee; their family has strong ties to both communities. The Vikings are coached by VHS alum Jim Rife, in his first season coaching his alma mater. He graduated in 1991 – which means Friday was his first chance to lift the Standlee Trophy. Valley senior Baylen Standlee, Lynn and Kathy’s grandson, also lifted the trophy.
Down To The Wire
Two games, similar stakes, two different outcomes. In Cambridge, Notus and Tri-Valley were tied in the final ten seconds when quarterback Maverick McKerrow found Spencer Hansen in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown to provide the winning score in a 2A WIC thriller. In Bancroft, Sho-Ban mounted a last-minute drive against North Gem, trailing 20-14. A pass to the end zone on the game’s final snap was intercepted by North Gem’s Clay Johnson, and he returned it 100 yards for a touchdown in the Cowboys’ 26-14 victory.
MaxPreps Mania
It’s everyone’s favorite time of year – time to start paying attention to MaxPreps’ mysterious computer formula and trying to figure out if their favorite team will qualify for the 1A or 2A 12-team playoff brackets. As it stands, Hagerman and Raft River are ranked first and second, respectively, in the 2A classification, while Kendrick and Carey occupy the top two spots in the 1A classification.
