Welcome to "Quick Kicks", a weekly snapshot at what's happening across the boys and girls soccer landscape.  Enjoy!

With the state tournaments taking place this past weekend, let's quickly look back at all six champions and how they achieved a first-place finish.

BOYS SOCCER

The 6A level featured Mountain View and Timberline meeting in the championship game, but each team had a tough road to get there. Mountain View survived Boise in PK’s to get there, and Timberline upset top-seeded Coeur d’Alene in overtime. In the championship game, Mountain View took a 1-0 lead at halftime. Timberline had a goal from Rhys Ford in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Mountain View scored another goal to win the game 2-1.

In the 5A ranks, Caldwell took the championship from Sandpoint despite the tournament being played in the Bulldogs' backyard. Each team was held scoreless before Caldwell’s Luis Alonso scored with under 11 minutes to go to take the lead. Walter Romero got the PK to go with 5 minutes to go, and Caldwell defeated Sandpoint with a final score of 2-0.

The 4A bracket featured a lot of chalk among the winners. Conference foes Sugar-Salem and Teton met in the championship game, but it didn’t come without overtime victories for each team in the semifinals. Teton put up 3 goals on the Diggers in the first half and another in the second. Sugar Salem responded with a goal of their own in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as Teton cruised to a 4-1 victory.

GIRLS SOCCER

Timberline took its 20-1 record into the state tournament hoping to win the state championship against Lake City. Each team went scoreless through regulation, leading to overtime. It was scoreless until Eve Rivera assisted Allee Haynes, who scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime and sent Timberline to the top of 6A soccer.

The most surprising championship result happened at the 5A level. Twin Falls and Hillcrest were the favorites to take the 5A crown, but Pocatello had other ideas. Pocatello knocked off Hillcrest in overtime in the semis, putting the 6th-seeded Thunder in the title game. Goals by Twin Falls’ Josie Carpenter and Pocatello’s Aryanna Gonzalez kept the game tied, leading to overtime. The first overtime was scoreless until Camryn Tatom assisted Aryanna Gonzalez for the game-winning goal in the second overtime for the 2-1 win.

Fruitland and Marsh Valley squared off in the championship game, which was a surprising matchup in the final. Marsh Valley upset top-seeded Sugar-Salem to get there, while Fruitland defeated Teton in the semifinal. Fruitland’s Karli Roubidoux scored the lone goal of the game in the first half as Fruitland took the 4A title with the 1-0 win.
