Team Preview

Last season Kimberly advanced to the 3A state play-in game held at American Falls, falling 52-32 to Shelley.

After coming up just short in the campaign, the Lady Dawgs are excited to get another opportunity in the new year, with plenty of talent returning to the floor.

That talent pool is led by All-Conference selections Lexy Phillips and Maysie Rongen.

Phillips will be one of the primary ball-handlers, while Rongen provides a strong option on the interior for Kimberly to create mismatches.

“Our strength is that we have almost everyone back from last year’s team,” said Head Coach Lawrence Pfefferle. “Also, our ability to rotate several players into our lineup.”

Other key returners include guards Kendra Keller, Jessi Schmitz, Ashlie Watts and Emily Wadsworth, along with post player Kayla Hughes.

“We have seven of our 10 players back from last season,” said Pfefferle. “Our entire starting lineup is returning.”

The key now is avoiding injuries.

“[Our x-factor] is staying healthy,” stated Pfefferle. “We are not very deep at the post position. Injuries there could have a big impact on the outcome of our season.”

There are multiple areas Kimberly will look to improve upon this season, including reducing turnovers offensively, minimizing fouls and grabbing more rebounds, especially on the defensive end.

Quick guards will allow the Lady Dawgs to put pressure on ball-handlers for the opposition from further out than in the past.

“Our overall team speed is quicker this year, hopefully allowing us to extend our defense,” said Pfefferle.

Look for Mazy Boyer and Lander Yamata to see time off the bench from the guard line this season as well, adding depth for a team that already has plenty of options past the starting five on the outside.

Kimberly begins the season on Nov. 13, hosting Canyon Ridge out of the 4A classification.
