Brayden Van Leuven rushed for 100 yards for Lake City in the loss.

5th-seeded Highland (5-5) will travel to 4th-seeded Eagle (6-3) in the quarterfinals.  12th-seeded Lake City ends its season at 6-4.

Mountain View 48, Meridian 14

After falling to Meridian 21-14 in the regular season, Mountain View earned revenge in the playoff opener for both teams, 48-14.

Logan Pichardo carried the ball eight times for 140 yards and five touchdowns in the win.  Denton Wilson returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and Behr Scott scored on a 34-yard run to cap the scoring for Mountain View.

Defensively, senior Beau Stewart and freshman Christian Bybee each snagged two interceptions for the Mavs.

Meridian’s scores came on a two-yard run from Hunter Bones and a 37-yard pass from Cash Cahill to Carson Bettis.

6th-seeded Mountain View (7-3) will now prepare for a quarterfinals rematch with 3rd-seeded Rocky Mountain (7-2).  11th-seeded Meridian bows out at 5-5.

Madison 21, Capital 14

Madison muzzled Capital’s explosive offense in a 21-14 first-round playoff win.

The Eagles struck first on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Quincey Clay to Elliot Schrack, and with six minutes to play in the opening quarter, Capital led, 7-0.

Madison answered just one play later on an 80-yard scoring run by Brennen Dredge, and the contest was tied, 7-7.

After Madison’s defense forced a three-and-out, the Bobcats struck again on a seven-yard touchdown run from Jace Johnson, and the score stood at 14-7 the rest of the first half.

Capital tied the contest in the third quarter on an eight-yard strike from Clay to Isaak Stafford.

The contest remained tied at 14-14 until the final two minutes of the game, when IdahoSports.com Player of the Game Hawke Cordero plunged in from a yard out.

The Madison defense held from there to preserve the 21-14 victory.

7th-seeded Madison (7-3) will now square off with archrival Rigby (8-1), the 2nd overall seed, in the quarterfinal round.  10th-seeded Capital concludes its year at 5-5.

Boise 22, Kuna 21

Boise defeated Kuna 22-21 and claimed its first playoff victory since 1992 thanks to a dramatic decision by head coach Mike Altieri.  Trailing 21-14, Boise found the end zone on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Wayne Bower to Will Saunders with just 19 seconds to play.

That’s when coach Altieri elected to go for the two-point conversion and the lead, rather than settle for a point-after kick, which would have tied the score at 21-21.  After Boise and Kuna each spent timeouts in an effort to strategize, the Brave lined up in an empty backfield.  Bower took the snap and ran in for the two-point conversion, propelling the Brave to the 22-21 win.

Bower completed 19-of-32 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 62 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.  Saunders caught four passes for 43 yards and the deciding touchdown while Max Walters added 31 yards and a touchdown on two receptions.

Hubsmith completed 12-of-13 passes for 64 yards and added 23 yards rushing on six carries.  Senior running back Jackson Sattelberg ran for 119 yards on 27 carries.  Nielsen caught five passes for 45 yards and the lone touchdown in the contest.

Minico led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, but Sandpoint outscored the Spartans 27-8 over the second and third quarters to coast to a 49-32 playoff win.

IdahoSports.com Player of the Game Jensen Sheetz ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.  He also caught two passes for 24 yards.

Logan Iverson spun the ball to the tune of a 20-for-26 performance with 346 yards, four touchdowns and an interception.  Brock Yarbrough caught eight passes for 146 yards and a touchdown while Gage Martin hauled in seven passes for 82 yards and a score.  Trenton Cross (one catch, 65 yards) and Knox Williams (three catches, 29 yards) also caught touchdowns from Iverson.

Defensively, Yarbrough forced a fumble near the goal line that was returned for a two-yard touchdown by Mason McLain.  Conner Brown also came away with an interception.

Shelley also took a kickoff back for a touchdown, courtesy of sophomore Cooper Pascoe.  Quarterback Alex Beck scored on a touchdown run for the Russets as well.

8th-seeded Blackfoot (6-4) will get its shot at top-seeded Bishop Kelly (9-0) in this week’s quarterfinals.  9th-seeded Shelley finishes the season at 5-5.

Bonners Ferry quarterback Alex Stolley was bottled up for 18 yards on 15 carries.  The senior was 8-of-12 passing for 45 yards and an interception.

7th-seeded Cole Valley Christian (6-4) will take its shot against 2nd-seeded Sugar-Salem (7-1) in a quarterfinal showdown.  10th-seeded Bonners Ferry wraps up the season with a 5-4 record.

South Fremont 35, Preston 34

After South Fremont fell to Preston on the road this year by a 42-35 margin, the Cougars exacted revenge when it counted most: at home in the opening round of the 4A playoffs by a 35-34 margin.

The difference in the game was a missed extra-point try from Preston in the fourth quarter.

South Fremont quarterback Cy Hill completed 8-of-19 passes for 155 yards, one touchdown and one interception.  But Hill did the most damage with his legs, rushing for 176 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries.  Hill’s efforts earned him IdahoSports.com Player of the Game honors.

3A CLASSIFICATION

Grangeville 28, Aberdeen 14

In a battle of teams that love to run the ball and control the clock, Grangeville out-executed Aberdeen in a 28-14 first-round triumph.

Tate Schumacher carried the ball eight times for 68 yards and a touchdown while also intercepting a pass on defense.  Those efforts garnered him the IdahoSports.com Player of the Game.  Quarterback Gage Smith, Hollis Elliot and Will Told also scored rushing touchdowns.

Aberdeen’s scores came courtesy of a three-yard run from Treyton Jenkins as time expired in the first half, as well as a one-yard quarterback sneak from Isaac Driscoll at the end of the third quarter.

5th-seeded Grangeville (9-1) will travel to 4th-seeded West Jefferson (8-1) in a quarterfinal rematch of the season opener for each of these teams.  12th-seeded Aberdeen concludes its season at 5-5.

Ririe 22, Buhl 20

Ririe delivered the most surprising upset of the opening round, nipping Buhl on the road, 22-20.

The Indians struck first on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Kannon Gambrel to Samuel Zamora.  Raidyn Pugsley successfully ran in the two-point conversion (a theme that would be critical later on), and Buhl led, 8-0.

The Indians extended their lead on a two-yard touchdown run from Pugsley.  This time, though, the two-point try was unsuccessful, as Gambrel slipped and fell short of the goal line.  But Buhl still led midway through the first quarter, 14-0.

Ririe responded on a one-yard plunge from Razden Harris.  Dillon Landon then hit Ethan Furniss for the two-point conversion to trim the deficit to 14-8 after one period of play.

In the second quarter, Ririe evened the score on a one-yard run from Kyler Lewis.  Ririe’s two-point run was stuffed by Buhl, though, and the two sides were tied, 14-14.

The score remained that way until seven minutes remained in the third quarter.  That’s when Ririe broke ahead for the first time on a three-yard run from Harris.  Landon hit Harris for the two-point conversion and Ririe led, 22-14.

Buhl quickly marched down the field and answered on a three-yard scoring run from Pugsley.  Buhl was flagged for a delay of game penalty on the two-point conversion, pushing the attempt back to the eight-yard line.  A reverse to Zamora fell short by one yard, leaving the deficit at 22-20 with 5:10 to play in the third.

Neither side scored again, leaving Ririe with the two-point road victory.

11th-seeded Ririe (5-5) will try to do the unthinkable again this week in a quarterfinal rematch with top-seeded West Side (9-0).  6th-seeded Buhl ends the year with a 5-4 record.

In addition to his first quarter rushing score, Beck hauled in two touchdown passes (one from Jackson Rice, one from Payden Robinson).  Robinson also threw a touchdown pass to Camden Cranney while Rice ran for a score.

Rice, Oakley’s starting quarterback last season, has been hampered by an injury for much of the season, but has returned just in time for the Hornets.  Robinson has filled in more than capably in Rice’s absence, and both saw time at the position in this contest.

Idaho City’s lone score came on a one-yard pass from Jackson Roeber to Mac Roeber.

4th-seeded Oakley (7-2) now prepares for a quarterfinal battle with 5th-seeded Wallace (8-1).  Although Oakley is seeded higher, Wallace will host this game because it is a conference champion.  11th-seeded Idaho City finishes the year at 3-5.

Notus starting quarterback Maverick McKerrow missed the game with an injury, forcing Pirates coach Charlie Shepherd Jr. to move Sawyer Nicoletti from receiver to quarterback to compensate.  Nicoletti completed 3-of-13 passes for 44 yards and two interceptions.  Nicoletti ran for 39 yards and a score while junior running back Mark Lungu added 229 yards rushing on 21 carries with one touchdown.

8th-seeded Kamiah (6-3) hits the road to face top-seeded Hagerman (8-1).  9th-seeded Notus finishes the year 6-3.

1A CLASSIFICATION

Council 36, Mackay 14

Council used a strong rushing attack and a suffocating defense to put the clamps on Mackay in a first-round playoff win, 36-14.

Tucker Armichardy rushed for a pair of first quarter touchdowns to stake Council to a 14-0 lead, and the Lumberjacks were never seriously challenged from there.  Quarterback Jim Tucker also found the end zone twice on running plays and Brody Davis added a rushing touchdown.

Council’s defense limited Mackay’s Grayden Bruley, a 1,000-yard rusher this year, to just 18 yards on nine carries.  Bruley did catch a touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Peyton Teichert.  Teichert went 7-of-19 for 62 yards and a score.  Kyren Follett also scored on a one-yard plunge for the Miners.

5th-seeded Council (7-2) heads north to battle 4th-seeded Coeur du Christ (9-0) in a quarterfinal showdown at Lake City High School in Coeur d’Alene.  12th-seeded Mackay ends the year with a 5-5 record.
