As a team, what are your offensive strengths? We basically have a new look and a new focus offensively. We like to push the ball as much as we can. We now have the personnel to play that style of basketball. We have some shooters and some good court savy.
Offensive areas you hope to improve on over last year: We need to finish at the rim. We have lacked “toughness” to score in the paint over the past several years. If we can somehow fix that problem, we should be a pretty balanced team.
As a team, what are your defensive strengths? We have some decent quickness with our guard line. Kayla, Kaela, and Jessica should provide some athleticism defensively. We lack the height with the guards but we hope to make up for that with good decision making and speed.
Defensive Areas you hope to improve on over last year: We have to rebound better. This starts with our post play. We have some tall girls but we need to get a bit tougher and secure rebounds better.
What are you most excited about in regards to this year’s team? I’m excited that we have eliminated all drama from our squad. These girls all get along and genuinely like each other. Whether or not that transcends into wins and losses, we’ll see. Either way, it should be an enjoyable season.
For the fans, what is the must-see game of the year on your schedule? Anytime you lace it up and against the conference front runners in Burley and Twin, it’s always fun. We hope we can stay with them this year.
What is the ‘X-Factor’ to having success this season as a team? The secret to our success this year will be to limit the distractions and get tougher. That is a struggle with almost every team….so the first team to accomplish that has a huge advantage.
If you could change one rule in high school basketball, what would it be? We should have a 25 point basket like they use to have in the MTV Rock and Jock basketball games.
Besides the pay, the fame and the glory, why do you coach high school basketball? It’s all about the journey. It’s amazing the lessons you learn throughout the season; not just about the game but about discipline, toughness, adversity, and relationships. I enjoy spending time with these kids and watching them grow not only as players but as people. It’s tough to put a price tag on that.
What makes your school the best place to coach for? We have an incredibly supportive administration and obnoxious student body. Our band is one of the most loyal groups of people around and they always provided a home court advantage.
