Personal Bio:
Hi there! I’m Josey Grover, and I have lived in Dubois, Idaho my whole life. I love sports and anything physical, but I also enjoy riding horses, playing the piano and spending time with friends and family. In October I turned 18, and I just graduated from high school! Throughout high school I loved to be involved in sports and was able to play varsity volleyball and basketball for four years, as well as coach elementary school aged students in basketball for two years. I love to play, learn and teach any kind of sport and I know they will continue to be a large part of me throughout my life.

Grades were always (and still are) important to me and after a lot of work and sleepless nights, I was able to represent my graduating class as the Salutatorian this year. I plan to attend Utah State University this fall and study to become a physical therapist!

Favorite high school memory, so far?:
I am fortunate to say that I truly enjoyed my high school experience. As far as choosing a favorite memory in those four years, there are almost too many to choose from! However, if I had to narrow it down, I would probably say that my favorite memory was playing in the Senior All-Star game for volleyball. I loved the opportunity that I had to play with girls from all different school who loved playing just as much as I did. It was awesome to see so many different skill sets come together and play! It was so much fun! In the end, my overall favorite part of that experience was the amount of support that I received from all my friends and family. There were so many people there to support me, and no amount of words could express how grateful I was for that love and support. It meant the world to me!

What is something most people do not know about you? :
One thing that most people outside of school do not know about me, is that I have taught myself to be ambidextrous. After a right shoulder injury in the 8th grade, I was forced to learn everything with my left. At first it was so frustrating and difficult, but it eventually became my biggest triumph and learning experience. Eventually, I became stronger in many things with my left hand, and it has helped me to through an extra curve at my competitors. After two surgeries, I am still battling the injury, but I have learned so many lessons from it, and it has helped me to overcome other obstacles in life. I know that I have more strength than I realize, and anything is possible with the right mindset.

Any thoughts on where you want to go to college? Any offers yet?:
I am heading to Utah State in Logan. I am pretty excited for this adventure and I can’t wait to get started in my career path. I truly believe that an education is the key to so many things in life, success being one of them. I am excited to challenge myself at a higher level of learning, and discover more about myself along the way.

When you "grow up" what is your idea of the perfect job?:
To me, the perfect job is not really something specific. Although I am very interested in the idea of becoming a physical therapist, I am also open the idea of something different. The perfect job should be a job that you love, not just one that you endure. I want to find a job that I look forward to every day, and hopefully one that helps other people progress and achieve their goals. I think a job can be rewarding in many different ways, and I would love to have a job that helps change people for the better.

What is the best advice you have ever received and from who?:
Another tough question! There are so many people who have influenced my life and have helped me to achieve my goals. One thing that has always stuck with me was said by Kirk Polatis in a meeting I went to years ago. He said, “Once you think you have gained humility, you have lost it.” This is a reminder to me that humility is something that you constantly have to strive for. I have taken this advice onto the court, into the class room, and will take it with my to college, to remind me that being humble about the blessings that talents that you have will allow you to see and help those around you. Everyone is blessed in different ways.

What advice can you give the kids coming up on how to get the most out of their high school careers?:
Oh, man if there is one thing that I could say, is to be involved and engaged! Try new things and you might be surprised how much you could like them. Take some chances while you can, because you will regret it if you don’t. Don’t be a “back seat student”. Get right up there in the front and be an active participant. Here’s a secret I was lucky to learn. Teachers like kids who are trying their best to learn. There are so many times when teachers have shown their appreciation for my interest in active learning. It’s always nice to be on the teacher’s good side! Give it your absolute all in all you do, and you won’t be disappointed with the results.

Your thoughts on being selected as one of the inaugural IdahoSports.com Student-Athletes of the Year?:
I was completely surprised to receive this award, but I was super excited of course! There are so many amazing athletes and students out there, and I am humbled to have been selected. I have truly been blessed with opportunities, coaches, and supporters throughout my life and they have helped me to reach higher than I ever thought I could. This award is one I will always remember and one that I am honored to receive. Thank you!

Nominated by Michael W. Knight, Teacher at Clark County HS:
" Josey Grover has represented Clark County High School and her community with honor and integrity. She has learned more on her own than all of her peers have learned in the classroom, combined. She taught me, her government teacher, things that she learned at Girls’ State and has shown compassion and charity to everyone in need. What I most admire about Josey, is her motivation. If you take away the awards, the scholarships, and the public gratitude, Josey would still have shared her goodness. And will continue to do so. Utah State University will profit from her association next. After that, I hope she chooses the medical profession, but wherever she goes, she will change lives. "
