One year after winning a state 5A championship with a senior-laden squad, the Trojans went through some growing pains with lots of new faces last year.

That made a 10-12 season, playing in the rugged 5A Inland Empire League, all the more impressive.

"I am excited about this team, because I think we have all the parts to be pretty good," said Marc Allert, beginning his fourth season as Trojans coach. "We have a lot of experience returning, along with some really good younger kids coming up. It will all depend on how they mesh together."

Among the returnees for Post Falls is Shayna Allert, a 5-foot-7 senior guard and the coach's daughter, who was an all-5A IEL pick last year.

Others back include Olivia Ellison, a 5-10 senior post; Madison King, a 5-6 senior guard; Maia Anderson, a 5-3 senior guard; Hannah Bodman, a 6-0 senior post; Sam Runkle, a 5-9 senior wing; Tiler Kyle, a 5-10 senior post; and Kim Reynolds, a 5-6 senior guard.

Allert, who also has 21 years' experience coaching boys basketball, said two freshmen could also make an impact -- Bayley Brennan, a 5-6 guard; and Melody Kempton, a 5-11 post.

"I think we should have a very balanced offensive attack this year," Allert said. "We have some guards who can get the ball to the right places in Bayley and Maia. We have some good outside shooters in Madison and Kim. Melody will really help our athleticism in the post, and Shayna and Sam can pretty much do it all. We will try to be as uptempo as possible, but have the capability to slow down if need be.
"Last year we didn't have a true point guard, so we had people playing out of position," he added. "We will be much better at that spot this year, which should make things easier for us."

Allert said his team should be solid defensively. Defensive rebounding hurt the Trojans last season, and that has been a point of emphasis this year.

Allert said the key to this season will be "how well our younger kids can mesh with the older ones."
