The Capital Lady Eagles are coming off back-to-back state tournament appearances heading into the 2014-15 basketball season. This season these Eagles hope to make it back for a third year, after finishing with a 17-9 record a year ago.
Returning eight starters from last year’s squad, which includes six seniors, Capital looks equipped for another successful season in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference.

The Eagles return all-conference honorable mention forward, Emily Eckhart and all-conference nomination forward, Nicole White. Eckhart is a stand-out soccer goalie for Capital, and has a knack of getting her hands on the ball. In 2014, she tied the school record for most steals in a game at 11, and is 12 away from becoming Capital’s all-time leader in steals. The school record is 88, and Eckhart currently sits at 76 going into the season.

Rounding out the returners for Capital are four seniors that include, Grace Jacobsen, Brooklyn Grange, Hannah Johnson, and Alexis Biermann. They also return junior, Brynn Dittman, and sophomore, Bella Lewis. Newcomers for the Eagles include four freshmen (2 guards, 2 forward), Yesenia Bendenelli (G), Beverly Slater (G), Elly Johnson (F), and Brittany Ralston (F).

“We have a nice mixture of young girls (4 freshman, 1 sophomore) that are talented and excited to be part of the program, mixed in with the older girls (2 juniors, 5 seniors) who are used to going to State and know what it takes to get there,” said head coach Blas Telleria.

Coach Telleria is in his eighth season as the Lady Eagles head coach and is excited about the potential his team has this upcoming season. “We seem to be a little quicker than we were last year and we might have a few more shooters. We should be able to speed the game up and open up our half-court offense a little more this year. We hope to be a little quicker and thus a little more aggressive in our approach this season.”

Where Capital needs to improve is on the perimeter, where they struggled to hit shots on a consistent basis last season. The X-Factors for the Lady Eagles season will be can they hit shots consistently and develop their younger talent. This season they should have greater basketball awareness, and in turn with that awareness these ladies should be more aggressive on both ends of the floor.

Capital will be in the mix in “pod A” this season and should be sitting in the top two in the pod throughout the year. Look for the Eagles to punch their ticket to State this season, making it the fourth time in five years.

GAME TO WATCH: Capital and Borah are in the same pod and will be playing each other twice again this season. This rivalry game is always fun to watch, so make sure you get out and attend on December 11 @ Capital and the final game of the regular season @ Borah on January 29th.
