There appears to be a resurgence of sorts going on inside the gym in Aberdeen this year as new Head Coach Ryan Whalen takes over on the sideline.

The Lady Tigers are coming off a 3-18 mark in the previous campaign, however an influx of talent is looking to quickly rebound from that.

In an effort to change their fortunes the Tigers will look to push the ball on offense and employ a swarming defensive attack on the other end.

Whalen was previously the 7th and 8th grade basketball coach at the middle school level so he should have a good idea of new talent coming up through the program that can step in and handle meaningful playing time.

Leading the way for the incoming talent is what the coach describes as a talented group of sophomores on the varsity squad.

Along with these players Whalen will rely on a few returners who have had some playing time on the big stage the past few seasons.

Makenna Schritter, Karissa Ramos and Pat Gonzalez were mentioned by their coach as the key returners who can be expected to see plenty of playing time.

Much of the leadership on and off the court will fall on another returner who will be stepping into a starting role at the varsity level for the first time this season.

Senior Madison Behrend has been named team captain for the squad and will be relied upon to help guide a team mixed with experienced players and inexperienced talent.

After only winning two conference games last season, both against West Side, the Tigers will need to get a strong start to the league slate with Bear Lake and West Side the first two teams on the schedule for Aberdeen.

In the previous campaign Aberdeen was able to knock off both teams, so the opportunity should exist for a good start.

Bear Lake was previously a 3A school and has now moved into the 2A Southeast Idaho Conference.

One of the main areas of emphasis for this team will be on the defense end where Whalen hopes to see an aggressive unit as his Tigers look to slow down some of the high-powered offensive attacks in conference action.

The new coach appears to have plenty of pieces in place to change the fortunes of Aberdeen this season on the hardwood.
