Team Preview

Written by: Sven Alskog

The Raft River Trojans started slow last season in Malta, however a late season surge gives hope that the new campaign could provide a change in fortunes.

That 7-3 finish to the year helped lead to a respectable 12-12 overall record.

Head Coach Garth Steed enters his fifth season manning the sidelines trying to continue improving the program.

If last season is any indicator, the Trojans appear to be on the right path, as the 12 wins was an eight victory improvement over the previous year.

Some key pieces from that group return ready to continue leading the team to more success.

Marka Baker, Lauren Schumann and Alexis Tuckett lead the group of returners for Steed. All three players have multiple years of starting experience at the varsity level.

That experience should help to guide a talented influx of players this season as they adjust to varsity basketball.

While plenty of talent exists within the starting five, Steed will hope to continue seeing improvement from a bench that has not been deep in years past.

It appears to be perhaps one of the deepest and talented squads he has had during his time in Malta.

The coach mentioned Rebecca Benetiz, Vicky Gomez and Marcie Williams as key newcomers to watch for the upcoming season. These players will be asked to step into large roles on a team with increased expectations.

Finding players to execute the high-octane style that Raft River plays will be important during early season action.

The Trojans will be up-tempo on offense while swarming the opposition on the defensive end. They will be looking to force teams into turnovers, allowing for easy baskets on the other side in the open floor.

If the squad is able to field the depth that its coach expects this season they should find success regardless of who they are playing.

Plenty of competition will be present within the 1AD1 Snake River Conference this season with the additions of Oakley and Valley from the 2A classification.

To compete in league play Raft River will be hoping to replicate the defensive intensity that they finished out last season with when they held five of their last nine opponents below 33 points.

During that span plenty of improvement was also shown on the offensive side of things, giving the Trojans a positive outlook as they get set to embark on a new season.
