The 2014-15 season was a rough one for the Cole Valley Christian Chargers boys basketball team. The squad mustered just two wins out of 21 games in the campaign, but there’s a combination of experience and new blood as the Chargers look to take a big leap forward in 2015-16.

Cole Valley Christian has a returning key trio of guard Jake Hohenshelt, imposing center Chris and ace defender Ryan DeBliek, along with a group of talented but inexperienced juniors that first-year head coach Brennan Koch will use to find the right match of five on the floor to improve on last season’s win total.

Junior forward Garret Hester and guards Trevor Evarts and Dominik Panchenko bolster the Chargers’depth, which should be one of their strengths in 2015-16. Their offense generates interchangeable roles, which will allow them to throw bodies at the opposition in waves with the goal of wearing down the opponent by the time crunch time rolls around in the fourth quarter.

Defensively cohesion will be key, especially coming off a tough season, but all-court defenders with a lunch-pail mentality would help the cause. There could be some tough knocks early in the season, but the goal for any prep team –particularly those looking to build like Cole Valley Christian is – is to use the regular season to jell together and be playing its best ball when it matters in February.

The key factor Koch pointed out in the team’s success this season will be how quickly the stable ofjuniors adjusts to the varsity level. If they mature quickly, things could be looking rosy in a hurry for the Chargers this winter.
