Team Preview

Written by: Brandon McIntosh

Two straight years the Lapwai Wildcats have faced the Prairie Pirates at the State tournament under the direction of Coach Eric Spencer and two years now the Wildcats have been crowned State champs. This season gets under way looking no different. Lapwai is a solid favorite this season. The Wildcats will be in the hunt for their third straight title.

This group of seniors have basically been playing on varsity since they were freshmen. They haven’t lost a league contest since falling to Prairie back in the 2013-14 season.

Led by Iris Domebo (State MVP and League MVP), Lapwai looks to keep that streak alive. Domebo is one of those players that is so smart and has a high understanding for the game and her team that she doesn’t need to be the leading scorer or even the second leading scorer in games. Domebo is the type of player that will do anything and everything her team needs. With games on the line, Iris understands that is when she needs to step up the most.

Joining Domebo, are a talented group of Wildcats-Shiniah Holt, Ione Chimburas, Koyama Young, and Joandra Wilson (returning from a knee injury). Together, they force a ton of turnovers and turn them into easy points. When not forcing turnovers, the Wildcats are busy knocking down plenty of outside shots.

This season, watch Lapwai compete for the league and State title. They will be tested by the Prairie Pirates in league and have a non-conference battle with extremely tough 3A Timberline. When all is said and done, look for Lapwai to be hoisting the trophy for a third straight season and these seniors going out in style.
