In his first season on the sideline for Canyon Ridge, Kevin Cato led a major turnaround, helping turn a 3-19 team one year prior into a 15-7 squad that was one of the most improved in the state.

While the positives of that season are obvious, gone are point guard Madison Bell and fellow guard Emily Bell, leaving a leadership opening for what is suddenly an inexperienced roster.

The inside-out combination of Lexi DeWalt from the forward position and Caitlin Crist from the guard line leaves a glimmer of hope that the Riverhawks will have enough of a scoring punch to remain competitive.

"Caitlin Crist and Lexi DeWalt will need to lead us in scoring most nights for us to have a chance," said Cato.

It's a lot of unknown past that duo and senior wing Madison Bauman.

"We will be a very inexperienced team. Our hope is that this [being] the second year in our system that things will come a little quicker to the girls," said Cato.

The young group will look to execute a run and gun style for the Riverhawks in what is perennially a tough conference in district four.

"We will try to speed the game up on both sides of the floor. We will look to run in transition every chance we get and try to pressure the ball as much as we can," added Cato.

With the inexperience, avoiding a surplus of turnovers on the offensive end will be a major key.

Plenty of unknowns exist, but that is part of the fun when it comes to high school sports.

"With our inexperience we don’t know how good we can be. It will be fun to watch this team grow," said Cato.
