Death, taxes, and the St. Maries boys basketball team winning districts.  Yep, you can pretty much set your watch by it now.  For the ninth consecutive season, the Lumberjacks will compete at the 2A State Tournament as a district championship.

They did so with a thrilling 53-50 win over an old foe, the Kellogg Wildcats.  Back in the day, there wasn't a more fierce rivalry in North Idaho than Kellogg-St. Maries, and after a sojourn into the 3A classification, the Wildcats moved back down to 2A this year and wasted no time in re-establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with.

But last night, with the game tied at 50-50, St. Maries' Dillon Holder sank a three from the corner as time expired, giving the Lumberjacks the walk-off win.

So St. Maries clinched the automatic bid to state from Class 2A District 1-2.  Kellogg, meanwhile, will battle Priest River for second place.  The winner of that contest will then face New Plymouth in a 2A State Tournament Play-In Game on Saturday.

Elsewhere...

-- Fourth-seeded Timberline and fifth-seeded Eagle punched their tickets to state by winning consolation bracket games at the 5A District 3 tournament.  Timberline sprinted past seventh-seeded Centennial 66-45, while Eagle knocked off third-seeded Meridian 75-73 in overtime.  Landon White put up an eye-popping stat line of 18 points, 19 rebounds and three steals for the Mustangs in the win.

-- Centennial will now face Highland in a 5A State Tournament Play-In Game on Saturday, while Eagle will do the same against the winner of Lewiston and Coeur d'Alene.

-- After winning at second-seeded Moscow on Monday night in the 4A District 1-2 Play-In Game, third-seeded Lakeland went to top-seeded Sandpoint and won 66-64 on a Nick Nowell layup with 1.4 seconds remaining.  Lakeland is now up one to nothing in the best-of-three series, and the Hawks have replaced Sandpoint in our Bracketology projections.

-- Third-seeded Minico went to top-seeded Twin Falls and knocked off the Bruins in the 4A District 4 championship 49-41.  JT Garza scored 19 points, while Ryker Stimpson added 15 for the Spartans.  Twin Falls will now host Jerome on Friday night for the second and final bid to state.

-- Buhl defeated Kimberly 58-52 in the 3A District 4 championship game.  Both teams qualified for state, so the game was strictly for bragging purposes.

-- Ririe claimed the 2A District 6 championship with a 62-55 win over North Fremont.  Just like it was on the girls side, North Fremont will play West Side on Saturday in a 2A State Tournament Play-In Game.

-- Lapwai defeated Kamiah in the 1AD1 District 2 championship 84-57.  Kase Wynott scored 38 for the Wildcats, while Ahlius Yearout added 17.  Kamiah will battle Potlatch for the second and final bid to state.

-- Rockland won a tight battle with Watersprings in a 58-53 win in the 1AD2 District 5-6 championship.  The Warriors will host Mackay on Saturday at 2:30 PM for the second and final bid to state.

Here is our latest Bracketology.  As a reminder, you can follow all of the district tournament action here.  Teams will be seeded according to their MaxPreps rating.  Teams in bold font have officially clinched state tournament bids.  Until official bids are clinched, we will project the highest seeded teams in each district tournament to claim the automatic bids available.  In the case of potential Play-In Games, the team with the highest MaxPreps ranking will be projected to win.
