On Tuesday, the Idaho High School Activities Association Board held their September meeting in Pocatello.

Several items were on the agenda, but none loomed larger than a litany of petition requests from various high schools around Idaho.

Idaho high schools are always given the option to petition up or down a classification level, based upon a number of factors including travel considerations and competitiveness of athletic programs.  In the past, a school had to submit its petition for every sport offered.

But starting this year, schools can petition up or down in individual sports.  A team that is a juggernaut in football, but struggles in basketball, could potentially move down a level in hoops but stay the same in football.

Needless to say, several schools submitted petitions.  Here's a list of who got approved, who got denied, and how it changes the landscape.  We've listed the changes by sport.

NOTE: These moves are based upon new school enrollment parameters that were passed by Idaho's Superintendents earlier this fall.  Read more about those changes here.

For a look at how Idaho's conferences/districts will change in each individual sport based upon these petitions, click here.

In other board items, MaxPreps rankings used to seed teams at state will now also include district tournament results.  Previously, only regular-season results were factored in.

And IHSAA Executive Director Ty Jones announced his retirement at the end of the 2023-24 school year.
