The 21
st edition of the Idaho Statewide All-Star Basketball Games featured a slight tweak to the format, but otherwise, the festivities looked remarkably similar to events of the past: a dizzying array of dunks, lights out three-point shooting, and good-natured ribbing from both sides were on display inside North Idaho College’s Christianson Gymnasium.

In lieu of the traditional Metro (District 3) vs. Region (everyone else) format, this year a coach’s draft was held instead. It led to some interesting dividing lines.

For example, cousins Cache and Cutter Beus ended up on opposite squads. Cache is from Skyview and Cutter is from Melba, and in years past, they would have played together.

Additionally, Cole Valley Christian coach Dan Waldeck had to watch one of his own players, Chargers senior Eli Kingery, scorch the nets on the opposing team.

The teams were named after business sponsors this year. In the Girls All-Star Game, Coeur d’Alene coach Nicole Symons led Team Coeur d’Alene Best Western Inn to a narrow 96-94 win over Team Andy’s Heating and Cooling, coached by Rigby’s Todd Barber.

The boys contest saw Team Domino’s, coached by Hillcrest’s Dave Austin, trounce Team IdahoSports.com, led by Cole Valley Christian coach Dan Waldeck, 137-101. Team Domino’s finished seven points shy of tying the all-time record for points in a game, set by Team Metro in 2018 at 144 points.

Snake River’s Rylie Edlefsen led a balanced CDA Inn attack with 25 points, and earned MVP honors for the girls’ game. She was joined in double figures by Owyhee’s Syd Rodriguez with 18, Bishop Kelly’s Addy Laible with 12, and Coeur d’Alene’s Maddie Mitchell with 11.

Lake City’s Sophia Zufelt led the Team Andy’s charge with 20 points, while Sandpoint’s Karlie Banks added 16.

In the boys contest, Team Domino’s jumped out to a 28-3 lead. The score was 44-20 after one quarter of play, and 75-45 at halftime.

Melba’s Cutter Beus poured in 31 points to lead Team Domino’s to the win, and the 6-foot-8 senior was named MVP of the contest. Beus was joined in double figures by six other members of Team Domino’s.

Team IdahoSports.com was paced by the Lapwai duo of Ahlius Yearout (26 points) and Kase Wynott (23 points).

It was a day of near-misses for Wynott, the 6-foot-6 Utah State signee. After making 30-of-32 three-point shots in the semifinals of the Three-Point Contest, Wynott fell to Owyhee’s Syd Rodriguez by a single shot, 19-18, in the co-ed final round. Rodriguez is committed to Division 1 Seattle University, and made the contest-winning shot as time expired.

Wynott also qualified for the finals of the Slam Dunk Contest. After leading all dunkers with a combined score of 88 points from the judges in the preliminary round, Teton’s Ty Brown nipped Wynott in the finals, 44-39.

Overall, this year’s event featured six Division 1 players (four girls and two boys); Kambree Barber (BYU), Syd Rodriguez (Seattle U.), Avery Waddington (Montana), Sophia Zufelt (UT-Rio Grande Valley), Liam Campbell (USC) and Kase Wynott (Utah State). A seventh D-1 player, Coeur d’Alene’s Teagan Colvin, couldn’t play after suffering a foot injury, but helped coach Symons from the bench as an assistant coach.
