Coeur d'Alene's Zach Keiser (23) breaks into the open field against Centennial last season. (Photo by Steve Conner)
 | Within Reach Coeur d'Alene's Keiser aiming for two big goals
COEUR d'ALENE - As a junior on a senior-laden team, Coeur d'Alene running back Zach Keiser felt the pain of failing to reach his goal just as it came into reach.
Last season, Coeur d'Alene was ousted in the state semifinals, losing to eventual state champion Eagle, 25-21. But Keiser hopes his season - and high school career - ends on a different note.
"Winning state is our No. 1 goal for sure," Keiser said. "We have a young team this year, but we all have the same goal in mind. And we know we have to work our butt off every day."
Working hard is what Keiser does best, according to Coeur d'Alene head coach Shawn Amos.
"Since I've been here, Zach the hardest worker we've seen - and it's paying off for him," said Amos, whose featured running back also runs the 40-yard dash in 4.58 seconds.
"Besides being a good athlete and a good natural runner, Zach is stronger and faster than he was last year. So, we're expecting a higher level of performance from him this year. He's a step faster and has a year more of maturity."
Keiser's maturity last season was evident both on and off the field.
He thrived in his role as the team's starting running back as a junior with 1,131 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns, the fifth-highest, single-season rushing total in school history.
Playing on varsity since his sophomore season, Keiser developed a good relationship with his upperclassmen teammates. So when three seniors were suspended last season for being at a party they shouldn't have been attending, Keiser was upset but determined to pick up the slack.
"When those guys got into trouble for going to a party, even though they weren't drinking, we really wanted to win that game for them," Keiser said. "I was irritated at them for putting themselves in that situation, but at the same time, I wanted to win for them. Even though they did something stupid, they were still my teammates."
Regardless of how Coeur d'Alene ends its season, Keiser still is on track to fulfill another life-long goal - play football on the college level.
"For the past six or seven years, I've always had a goal to go to Washington State," Keiser said. "But for the past three years, I've wanted to play at Boise State. But to go anywhere at the Division 1 level would be a dream."
While Idaho State and Eastern Oregon have already offered Keiser a scholarship, he has recently started getting interest from Idaho, Washington State, Boise State and Montana.
"Zach is such a competitive kid, but there's nothing really dramatic about him," Amos said. "He's done it the right way. He's paid his dues. He's worked hard - and he cares about winning. He's the kind of high school running back you want to have."

ANY TIME, ANY PLACE
Boise's Reid can't get enough soccer
BOISE - While many high school athletes like to dabble in multiple sports, Graham Reid finds himself on the opposite end of that spectrum. There's simply only one sport that will do: soccer.
But for the Boise defender, Reid isn't picky about the venue. Any time, any place. And if there isn't a time or place scheduled, count on him to do it himself.
"I go to a lot of camps and play in tournaments in the summer," Reid said. "But some kids don't. They're sitting around doing nothing. So, I'm always organizing games for the guys who aren't as immersed in soccer as I am.
"It's good to see what new players you're going to have and to help players keep their touch."
If Reid can find a field great, but the playing surface can just as easily be a black top or a parking garage.
"We'll go anywhere and play," Reid says. "Street soccer is a lot of fun. All you really need is two goals and a ball to play."
Think soccer flash mob - far more fun and better exercise than your 50th four-man game of Halo on a lazy summer afternoon.
Playing soccer incessantly is the only way Reid knows to get better. After all, that was his formula for success in moving to a slightly better-than-average player to one of the top recruits as a defender in the Northwest.
"When I switched positions from midfield to defense my freshman year, that's when everything started to click for me," Reid said. "For some reason, I started working harder. Whenever I would work hard in practice, it would translate into the games, and just get better by hard work."
In his new position, Reid is more driven by the non-stop challenge of dispossessing a player of the ball.
"I want to get the ball from the other player," Reid said. "When you're one versus one, it's either you or the other guy who is going to win the ball. You can't both have it. So I just love winning the ball.
"But over the last few years, I've learned there's a lot more to playing defense, like positioning and communicating and telling the other defenders where to go. It's put me in a place where I can see more of the field and assess everything that is going on and decide what needs to happen."
Reid's coach, Mike Darrow, concurs.
"He understands where our deficiencies are and takes over that role," Darrow said. "It can change from time to time and moment to moment within the game. He's just an all-around pretty smart player who doesn't like to lose."
In a wide-open 5A Southern Idaho Conference, Reid, who was one of only four underclassmen on last year's Boise team, hopes to help the Braves come back from a disappointing finish in the state tournament last year.
"We're looking for a state title this year," Reid said. "Last year, I felt like we were the best team, but we choked against Centennial in the semifinal. So, we're looking to come back this year and win another state title."
