Trey Lane- 2012-2013 2nd team all-conference.

Do you have any new incoming “impact” players?
Lane Sale, Power Forward, Senior, 6’6”, and Talon Freelove, Forward, Senior, 6’3”
As a team, what are your offensive strengths?
Size, athleticism, and depth. We are the biggest team Homedale has had in probably the last 10 years (Lane Sale, 6’6”, Caleb Oviedo, 6’3”, Talon Freelove, 6’3”, Britt Eubanks, 6’2”). All of those bigs can run the floor well and have good touch inside and out. We have Trey Lane coming back who was our best 3pt shooter from last year (34/91 37%). I will look for Trey to be our main scorer again this year.
Offensive areas you hope to improve on over last year:
We want to improve our overall offensive consistency from last year. We had no depth last year, so if someone was having an off night there wasn’t anyone there to pick up the slack. This year we should be 10 players deep, so hopefully we will be more consistent across the board.
As a team, what are your defensive strengths?
Athleticism, length, and depth. The main thing we always focus on is defense. With our size we will have the option to play a lot of man and zone defenses very effectively. With our depth we will be able to rotate more guys in to keep everyone rested.
Defensive Areas you hope to improve on over last year:
Improvement areas include better team defense and full court pressure. Last year it was hard to put on full court pressure with no depth because of fatigue issues late in the game. Hopefully we won’t have those problems this year with the deep bench.
Does your team have a motto/theme for the upcoming season?
Theme: “Responsible to the element, accountable to the mission.”
What are you most excited about in regards to this year’s team?
Most excited about the intensity of our practices. Because of our depth playing time is going to be a premium, so to get that play time they are going to battle to the extremes in practice.
For the fans, what is the must-see game of the year on your schedule?
Without a question it is our first league game against Fruitland on January 16, 2014. I think they have won the last 11 district championships. In order to get to the top we have to beat them. It is a great way to start off league play.
What is the ‘X-Factor’ to having success this season as a team?
“Accepting of roles. It is about the big picture environment, and it takes maturity to accept it, to be convinced to buy in fully. No matter your role, it is important. It may not be glamorous, but it’s necessary for us to win.” -John Gruden
If you could change one rule in high school basketball, what would it be?
Easy….Shot Clock. We play a fast pace style. Having a shot clock would only play into our style of play. I personally don’t like the old school of play of walking the ball down the floor. Kids like to play fast. It would make the game much more exciting in my opinion.
Besides the pay, the fame and the glory, why do you coach high school basketball?
I like to coach high school basketball because it gives me a chance to make or attempt to make these kids good basketball players but more importantly good, productive human beings. Teaching them life skills and teamwork lessons is what it is all about. If you teach them those things they will be successful in sports and life.
What makes your school the best place to coach for?
The community support. We cannot pass a school levy, but I asked for money this year to get new glass backboards in the gym. In four weeks I had enough money to replace all of them in the gym. The Homedale community is very supportive of our high school sports teams. As a coach if there is ever a need the community seems to always step up and help out.
